Hotel Description

You know, stepping into Ai Savi di Venezia for the first time felt like stumbling into one of those hidden gems that Venice hides in plain sight – right there on Calle della Mandola, just a stone’s throw from the chaos of St. Mark’s Square. I mean, it’s technically in the San Marco district, at 685 San Marco, but honestly, it’s tucked away enough that you don’t feel like you’re drowning in the tourist hordes all day. I arrived by vaporetto from the train station – because, let’s face it, driving in Venice is a non-starter with no cars allowed – and after a quick walk through those narrow alleys, the check-in was a breeze. The staff, these warm Italian folks who actually live in the city (not some seasonal imports), greeted me with a genuine “benvenuto” and a quick tip on avoiding the overpriced gondola rides nearby. The lobby’s got this cozy, old-world charm – think exposed wooden beams and that faint, salty scent from the canals drifting in – without trying too hard to be fancy. Oh, and if you’re hauling luggage, watch out for the uneven cobblestones outside; I nearly tripped, but that’s Venice for you.

What really sold me on the place, though, was how it balances that classic Venetian elegance with stuff that actually matters when you’re wiped out from sightseeing. The rooms – mine was on the second floor, overlooking a quiet side canal – are sort of compact, like most spots in this historic building, but they’re spotless and thoughtfully done up with plush bedding that feels like a hug after dodging crowds at the Rialto Bridge (which is literally a five-minute stroll away). I loved the little touches, you know? Fresh pastries at breakfast with that strong espresso that hits just right, and the free Wi-Fi that’s surprisingly reliable for streaming your travel pics – not always a given in these old palazzos. Noise-wise, it’s peaceful at night once the day-trippers clear out, but well, during high season in summer, you might hear the occasional boat horn or laughing groups wandering back from Harry’s Bar down the way. The 4-star rating feels spot-on; it’s not over-the-top luxurious, but the rooftop terrace (if you can snag a spot) offers killer views of the rooftops and that golden-hour glow over the lagoon. And speaking of practicalities, there’s no on-site parking – duh, it’s Venice – but they hooked me up with a nearby water taxi service that didn’t break the bank.

All in all, if you’re eyeing a trip to Venice and want somewhere that feels authentic without the stuffiness of those big chain hotels, Ai Savi di Venezia is a solid pick – that 9.1 rating isn’t hype. It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who appreciate the intimacy, though families might find the rooms a tad snug. I left feeling like I’d actually experienced the city, not just passed through it, and yeah, I’d book again in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the alleys are quieter and the magic really shines.

    amazing!! location, facilities, the balcony!

    What could be improved: nothing

  • Sara from United States – 10 March 2025 (10/10)

This place is fantastic! Beautiful, comfortable with two separate rooms and bathrooms and a kitchenette! Location was also great! Near everything and easy to get to

What could be improved: The four flights of stairs to get to the room but that’s to be expected

  • Stefan from Austria – 24 February 2025 (8/10)

Good location next to San Marco, two bathrooms and bedrooms.

  • Tze from Singapore – 25 December 2024 (9/10)

The spacious property. The great location. The rooftop terrace. The smart TV with youtube in the hall. The washer and dryer worked well.

What could be improved: One of the toilet's exhaust fan was not working. The room's TV was not "smart" with no youtube.

  • Kathy from United States – 19 October 2024 (10/10)

    Meeds better signage on exterior

  • Christine from United States – 13 October 2024 (8/10)

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. Nico and Fabio, went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The house was beautifully decorated, with a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comforts.

The location is perfect for exploring the beautiful walled city. Nico provided excellent recommendations for local restaurants and activities, ensuring we experienced the best of the region.

We stayed late September/October which was perfect to enjoy the outdoor terrace and balcony for a drink/nibble.

While the apartment was located on Level 3, Nico and Fabio helped us with our luggage.

It truly felt like a home away from home, and I can't wait to return! I will definitely recommend to any friends.

What could be improved: The stairs would not be suitable for everyone but were no problem for us. Nico mentioned a lift is being installed.

  • Kevin from United States – 2 October 2024 (10/10)

Beautifully remodeled interior that is one block from St Marks. This is truly the heart of Venice.

What could be improved: Four flights of stairs mean this is definitely not for the disabled.

  • Marta from Hungary – 18 September 2024 (10/10)

The apartment is close everything in a busy area. There are a lot of people on the street, but the flat is quiet. The apartment is on the third floor and you have to go up the stairs. But is ok. I recommend it.

  • Paul from United States – 19 August 2024 (8/10)

The location and the roof top platform.

What could be improved: Never saw the staff and was really only reminded about what not to do and when 8 had to check out. Wasn't very welcoming.
