Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to Giudecca on the vaporetto from San Marco – you know, that quick hop across the lagoon that costs just a few euros if you’ve got a day pass – and spotting the massive red-brick hulk of the Molino Stucky right away. It’s this old flour mill turned into apartments and a hotel, honestly one of those spots that feels like you’ve stumbled into Venice’s industrial past without all the tourist gloss. The address is Giudecca 809, tucked along the waterfront, and let me tell you, arriving by water taxi at dusk with the sun dipping behind the buildings? That’s the way to do it – the salty breeze off the Giudecca Canal hits you first, mixed with that faint, briny lagoon smell that screams authentic Venice. Check-in was straightforward, though a bit DIY since it’s more apartment than full-service hotel; you pick up keys from a little office downstairs (pro tip: email ahead if you’re arriving late, as it’s not staffed 24/7). No cars here, obviously – Venice rules – so if you’re lugging bags, factor in a short walk from the Palanca stop. But once you’re in, whew, the space opens up. My unit was on the upper floors, with these high ceilings and exposed brick that give it a sort of rugged charm, like you’re living in a converted warehouse – which, well, you kind of are.

What really sold me was how it balances that historic vibe with practical touches for real travelers. The apartment’s got a full kitchen – nothing fancy, but stocked enough for whipping up pasta from the little market on Fondamenta San Giacomo nearby (grab some fresh tomatoes and basil there; it’s way cheaper than the mainland supermarkets). Views? Killer – floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the canal, where you can watch gondolas and vaporettos zip by, especially magical in the mornings when the light bounces off the water. It’s quiet, too, compared to the chaos over in Dorsoduro or San Polo; Giudecca’s got this laid-back residential feel, with locals chatting on benches and kids playing soccer in the campos. I mean, sure, it’s a trek if you want to hit the Rialto Market every day – about a 15-minute boat ride – but that’s part of the appeal, escaping the crowds after a long day of sightseeing. Noise levels are low at night, though you might hear the occasional boat horn or church bells from Santa Maria della Visitazione across the way. And honestly, for a 4-star spot with an 8.1 rating, it’s spot-on – comfy beds, reliable Wi-Fi (crucial for mapping out your next adventure), and even a rooftop pool access if you’re in the connected hotel part, but fair warning, it gets busy in summer peak (June to August, when Venice swarms).

Look, if you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re actually living in Venice rather than just passing through – maybe with a family or on a longer stay – this place is gold. It’s not perfect; the bathroom was a tad dated, with those old-school tiles that echo a bit, and if mobility’s an issue, note there are stairs involved in the older sections. But overall, it gave me that rare sense of peace in a city that can overwhelm you. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season in fall when the fog rolls in and everything feels even more atmospheric. At that rating, it’s a solid choice for getting the real deal without breaking the bank.

  • Margherita from Canada – 13 September 2024 (9/10)

    Good location, spacious And clean

What could be improved: Little sunlight and view is mediocre

  • Marc from France – 16 March 2023 (9/10)

Roomy apartment with very well equipped kitchen – The Giudecca island is a quiet and pleasant area where real Italians live, in contrast to the busy main island. There is a "Minimarket Coop" 10 minutes walk away. You get to the island using the public transportation system of "vaporetto" boats – Lines 2 and 4.1, 4.2 – It takes some getting used to so it's a good idea to study https://www.venice.nu/maps/vaporetto-map/ ahead of time – You can also hire a private taxi on water (expensive). –

  • Jo from United Kingdom – 3 October 2022 (8/10)

Cosy and comfortable, good view. Takes a bit of effort to get to as is on Guidecca island, but it is away from the crowds and a bit different.

What could be improved: Sofa/living area was a strange lay out, with the tv in the bedroom instead. Could do with a bit of paint in places.

  • Karin from Netherlands – 8 June 2022 (7/10)

Quiet location within easy reach of towncentre

What could be improved: Bathroom outdated, no screens at windows so not possible to have the windows open. This made the sppartment very stuffy.

  • Dammer from Germany – 2 March 2024 (9/10)

    Excellent location

  • Andrew from United States – 21 May 2023 (6/10)

Easy to get to public transportation and the bed was comfortable

What could be improved: Mosquitos that I killed with provided spray, broken water kettle, difficult to understand instructions, no soaps or washing detergent

  • Patrick from France – 9 January 2025 (9/10)

Emplacement au calme bon immeuble très bien placé

What could be improved: Panne d’ascenseur alors que l’appartement est au 5eme etage

  • Sergio from Belgium – 9 August 2024 (7/10)

    Le calme et l’espace

What could be improved: Climatisation défectueuse. 29 degrés en permanence malgré la climatisation réglée sur 18!!! Impossible de rester la journée dans l’appartement.
