Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Appartamenti Ghetto Vecio during one of those classic Venice trips where you’re dodging the summer crowds around San Marco and just need a breather. It’s tucked away in Cannaregio, right in the heart of the old Jewish Ghetto – you know, that atmospheric spot with the synagogues and the quiet campo where locals actually hang out. I got there by vaporetto from the train station, hopping off at Guglie, and it was a quick walk along Fondamenta degli Ormesini, past those little bars spilling out with cicchetti and spritz drinkers in the evening. Honestly, the address – Cannaregio 1150, Interno 1 and 2 – sounds straightforward, but Venice being Venice, it’s all about navigating those narrow calli without a map app failing you. Check-in was low-key; the owner met me at the door with keys and a quick rundown in broken English-Italian mix, no fuss, no front desk drama. The building’s got that weathered charm, with stone steps that echo a bit as you climb – yeah, no elevator, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing.
What really won me over was how these apartments feel like a slice of real Venetian life, not some sterile hotel room. I stayed in one of the upper units, and it was spacious enough for a couple or small family – think exposed wooden beams that creak softly underfoot, a kitchenette stocked with basics (I whipped up pasta from that tiny market on Rio Terà San Leonardo nearby), and windows overlooking a sleepy canal where you hear the occasional gondola paddle slicing through water at dusk. The decor’s sort of rustic-modern, with comfy beds that don’t sag like some budget spots I’ve tried, and the bathroom had that fresh, herbal soap smell that lingers. It’s rated an 8, which feels spot-on; nothing flashy, but clean and thoughtful – they even left a bottle of prosecco chilling. Being in the Ghetto Vecchio area means you’re steps from hidden gems like the kosher bakery on Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, where the morning scent of fresh zaleti biscuits wafts in if you crack a window. Noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet after 10 PM, especially off-season in fall when the tourists thin out, though summer weekends can bring some chatter from the nearby osterias. I mean, it’s not dead silent – Venice never is – but way better than the racket near Rialto.
All in all, if you’re after that authentic stay where you can pretend you’re a local for a few days, this place nails it. Sure, the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms (bring a book or just enjoy the downtime), and getting groceries means a bit of a trek if you’re not up for it, but that’s Venice for you. I’d go back in a heartbeat – it’s got that four-star comfort without the pretension, and wandering out to catch the vaporetto to Murano or just strolling to Strada Nova for gelato feels effortless. You end up saving on meals by cooking in, and honestly, waking up to church bells and canal reflections beats any chain hotel vibe. If Venice is on your list, skip the overpriced spots and settle here; it’s the kind of place that makes the city feel like home, even if just for a weekend.

The apartment is fantastic and the host was very kind and let us put our luggage in early
What could be improved: Both showers need attention. The shower in the bath needs to be able to go higher and have a shower curtain put round. The shower in the cubicle needs fixing we couldn't higher it so was very awkward to useWarm cosy and clean apartment – Mark from Lithuania – 4 September 2023 (7/10)

Very safe area and comfortable apartment. – Georgette from Malta – 25 June 2024 (10/10)
We communicated with Mr Giacomo via booking.com and he arranged for us to collect the keys from Albergo Marin since we arrived after the check in. Albergo Marin is maybe a 10 minute walk from the apartment. The apartment although small is very comfortable for a family of 4. It has a/c and kitchen is equipped with utensils even though we didn't cook. Near the apartment there are a lot of restaurants and a supermarket is approx a 10minute walk. It is in the centre of the Ghetto Canareggio Area which is very quiet compared to the area of San Marco and Rialto. We also liked the fact that we could catch the ferry to Burano and Murano from S Giobbe waterbus station which is only a few minutes walk. The Guglie waterbus station is also a 2 minute walk. For the check out we could also leave our luggage at Albergo Marin so also this was very convenient.
What could be improved: All was goodExceptional – Liana from Armenia – 26 October 2023 (10/10)
