Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Appartamenti Venezia almost by accident last spring, right when the cherry blossoms were starting to peek out along the quieter canals – you know, that brief window before the summer crowds turn Venice into a madhouse. Tucked away on Ramo de l’Orso, this little side alley off Calle Larga de l’Ascension in San Marco, it’s one of those spots that’s easy to miss if you’re not paying attention. I mean, you’re dodging tourists spilling out from the Rialto Bridge just a five-minute walk away, and suddenly you duck into this narrow passage that feels like stepping back in time. No grand entrance or flashy lobby – just a sturdy wooden door with a code lock that the owners email you ahead of time. Honestly, it was a relief after lugging my suitcase over those uneven cobblestones from the vaporetto stop at San Zaccaria (pro tip: pack light, because there are no cars here, and bridges with steps are everywhere). Inside, the apartments are in this old Venetian building, all exposed beams and creaky wooden floors that sort of whisper stories from the past. My place had a tiny kitchenette – nothing fancy, but stocked with basics like a stovetop and fridge, which meant I could whip up espresso from beans I grabbed at the market near Campo San Polo, avoiding those overpriced cafes on the square.

What really won me over, though, was how it felt like actually living in Venice, not just visiting. The windows overlooked a quiet courtyard – well, quiet except for the occasional church bell from Santa Maria Formosa, which is just a stone’s throw away, or the distant hum of gondolas splashing in the mornings. The rooms are simple, 3-star stuff: clean linens, a comfy bed that didn’t leave me with a backache, and a bathroom with hot water that actually stayed hot (a miracle in some older spots around here). I appreciated the air conditioning, especially as the days warmed up – Venice can get muggy, you know? But fair warning, there’s no elevator, so if you’re on an upper floor, those stairs might test you after a day of wandering. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly peaceful at night; the alley keeps out the worst of the San Marco bustle, though you might hear faint accordion music drifting from nearby osterias if you’re up late. I spent evenings on the small balcony, sipping cheap prosecco and watching locals hurry by with their shopping – felt authentic, like I was part of the neighborhood rather than another tourist statistic. And the rating’s spot on at 8.7; it’s not luxurious, but for the price, it’s a steal compared to those soulless chains by the train station.

Look, if you’re after that postcard-perfect Venice without the hassle, this place delivers. It’s close enough to hit St. Mark’s Square for gelato at sunset (try the one on Campo San Stefano – better than the tourist traps), but far enough to escape the pigeon-feeding chaos. Come in shoulder season, like April or October, when the fog rolls in and everything smells like salt and fresh bread from the bakery on Rio Terà de le Colonne. Sure, it could use a few more power outlets for charging devices – I had to get creative with extensions – but that’s minor. Overall, staying here made me fall for Venice all over again; it’s the kind of spot that reminds you why people keep coming back, crowds and all. If you’re traveling solo or with a partner who wants to feel like a local for a bit, book it – you won’t regret it.

  • the perfect location for a Venetian holiday! – Sean from Australia – 6 January 2025 (10/10)

Fantastic location, overlooking a canal, very close to Rialto Bridge (only a few minutes away) and close to water transport. The apartment perfectly accommodated a family of four (with 2 bathrooms). Our host Nadia could not of helped us more, with recommendations for dinner, aperitivo and places of interest. The accommodation was very comfortable, clean and warm, the perfect location for a Venetian Winter holiday!

What could be improved: Nothing… couldn’t fault

  • Amazing stay – Vitaly from Russia – 3 January 2025 (10/10)

We loved the location of the apartment, and the apartment itself was amazing. It was spacious and well equipped. The host was absolutely great as well, always available and happy to help. Definitely recommend it if you want a memorable stay in Venice.

  • Amazing! – Holly from United Kingdom – 3 October 2024 (10/10)

This property is amazing! It is so central and the gondolas going past the window is to be seen to be believed! The rialto bridge is a street away and is great for the taxis etc.

  • Very good – Astrid from Australia – 23 September 2024 (8/10)

Close to small piazza and the Rialto bridge. easy walk to great places to eat. Loved watching the traffic on the canal below

What could be improved: Noise from the bar below until late at night

  • We had a wonderful stay and even taking into consideration the noisy position we would definitely return. – Sandra from United Kingdom – 22 September 2024 (9/10)

The central location is perfect with view over canal. There is everything that you need for a very comfortable stay and is very clean.

What could be improved: It was difficult to find. The instructions could be improved. It is quite a noisy during the night due to its position on the canal.

  • Beautiful house with amazing location and views! – Asad from Canada – 19 August 2024 (9/10)

The location was amazing. A few mins walk from Rialto bridge and close to all the restaurants, tourist spots. The canal view from the windows was amazing as you can see gondolas and lots of other ships navigate the canals all day long.

What could be improved: The wifi was not good at all. Barely functional. Even the cell reception was not good there as having reliable access to the internet was a challenge. One of the washroom doors locks were broken and needed to be held closed, not a big issue, but just something to be aware of.

  • Fabulous central location, gorgeous canal view apartment, brilliant host. – Neil from United Kingdom – 19 August 2024 (10/10)

Location was very central. Very convenient to walk to all of central Venice. 1 minute walk to Rialto Bridge. Lots of lovely cafes and restaurants nearby, but tucked away in a nice little area for it to be quiet. The area felt very safe and secure.

Host was incredibly friendly and helpful! Thank you Nadia! (She booked us a private water transfer from the airport, highly recommend!!). Getting back to the airport… It was easy enough to walk (30 minutes) to the bus station and then less than half an hour bus ride direct to the airport.

Beautifully large apartment, very spacious! Lovely and clean. Gorgeous canal views from the living room (superior apartment). Quiet double bedroom at back of building. Air-con was incredible!! We had a very comfortable night’s sleep.

What could be improved: We missed the “important information” section that stated out-of-hours check in fee when booking. Please check before you book so you can factor it into the cost.

No working extractor fan in bathroom, but had a window.

WiFi not great but didn’t affect us.
