Hotel Description

You know, the first time I stumbled upon Appartamento Ghetto Novissimo, I was wandering through Cannaregio after ditching the crowds around San Marco – honestly, that area’s a madhouse in summer, with all the tour groups blocking the bridges. Tucked away on Cannaregio 1441/A, right in the heart of the old Jewish Ghetto, this place feels like you’ve scored a secret apartment in one of Venice’s most underrated neighborhoods. It’s not your typical glossy hotel; it’s more like staying in a friend’s historic flat, with those high ceilings and wooden beams that creak just a bit when the wind picks up off the canal. I remember checking in – well, it’s self-check-in mostly, which was a breeze after a long vaporetto ride from the station, but do note there’s no elevator, so if you’re hauling heavy bags up those narrow stairs, pack light or brace yourself. The place smells faintly of old stone and fresh linen, and from the window, you get glimpses of locals chatting on Rio di San Girolamo, not the postcard Grand Canal views, but that’s what makes it authentic, you know?

What really won me over was how it blends that old-world charm with just enough modern touches to make you comfortable – think a compact kitchenette where I whipped up espresso from beans I grabbed at the nearby market on Strada Nova (pro tip: hit up the kosher bakery there for some killer zaleti cookies if you’re into that). The rooms are spacious for Venice standards, with these plush beds that swallow you up after a day of dodging pigeons in Piazza San Polo, which is just a 10-minute stroll away. It’s quiet here, especially in the evenings when the Ghetto winds down – no blaring boat horns like you’d get closer to Rialto – though you might hear the occasional church bell or a cat yowling, which sort of adds to the vibe. I mean, it’s rated 8.6 for a reason; it’s clean, the Wi-Fi’s solid (crucial for mapping out those hidden cicchetti bars), and being in Cannaregio means you’re steps from spots like the Madonna dell’Orto church, where Tintoretto’s buried – locals love pointing that out. Oh, and parking? Forget it; Venice is car-free, so leave the wheels at Piazzale Roma and embrace the walk or water taxi. One minor gripe: the bathroom’s on the smaller side, with that classic Italian shower that floods if you’re not careful, but hey, it’s part of the charm.

All in all, if you’re the type who wants to live like a Venetian rather than just visit – dodging the high-season frenzy in July while exploring quieter alleys – this is your spot. It’s got that four-star polish without feeling stuffy, and at the end of the day, curling up here after sunset, listening to the lagoon lap against the walls, makes you feel connected to the city’s soul. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-peak in spring when the neighborhood’s blooming with wisteria and fewer folks around. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that sticks with you.

  • A quiet neighborhood steps from the train station. – Hanhbrian from United States – 29 July 2024 (9/10)

The location was very quiet and not a busy street, but it was only a few steps away to all the restaurants and action in Venice. We appreciated that it had a washer and dryer, but also access to a laundry line outside the window which dried our clothes quickly in the sun.

There were 2 AC units (one in bedroom and one in living room). The second bedroom did not have AC in the wall, but we left the door open and the floor fan kept the kids nice and cool. Although I did not do any cooking, I appreciated that the kitchen was equipped with cooking items such as cooking oil and spices.

This location is a short walk from the train station so it was so nice that our host meet us and gave us a tour as we headed to the home. When it was time to go to airport, he gave us great advice and was super helpful. He recommended a great place to eat close by and it was excellent for lunch.

What could be improved: There are 2 full size bathrooms. One has a bathtub and the second one had a standing shower. The shower door was kind of flimsy so it was hard not to bump it and water to spill on the floor. Otherwise, this apt was perfect for our family.

  • Nice place to stay visiting Venice – Elena from Kazakhstan – 6 January 2024 (9/10)

If there is nomination in booking the best owner. It would be the owner of this apartment.
We arrived by the train and it was literally 10 minutes walking distance to the apartment. The owner was so kind and met us and took us to the place. Everything was cleaned, fully equipped
2 bedrooms which was very good for us
Very warm (we were in winter so we’re bit worry how warm it would be
    It was very good.

What could be improved: When you take a shower the water somehow splashing/ flooding out of the shower spot and bathtub. Even if we tried to be very careful. So somehow it should be fixed.

  • Great location in Venice – Wan from Malaysia – 3 July 2023 (8/10)

Marco & Barbara were very nice – they advised us how to get to Barbara's shop so that we could leave our luggage there since we arrived before check-in time. Barbara then walked us to the apartment & showed us how to use some of the appliances including washing machine.
The apartment is very spacious and is very comfortable for 4 persons (adults). It is at a good location, even though you have to walk about 25 min to St Mark's square but in Venice, everything has to be on foot. There is ample kitchen utensils including some basic cooking oil, salt & pepper etc – good enough for simple cooking. It is also very close to the former Jewish quarters which also made an interesting tour. Check-out was also seamless.
The apartment overlooks the canal on one side – which is nice but can be noisy when boat passes by. It is also easy to walk to either the S. Marcuola Casino or Guglie vaporetto stops (5 min or less).

What could be improved: The air conds were not working when we arrived and it was quite hot during the day – it was one of our key booking criteria as we knew it would be hot in Venice, even in June. Luckily, the hosts were able to provide 2 fans upon request hence that helped us cool down during the day after a lot of walking.
For the 2nd bathroom, it was having to take showers in a bathtub and there was no shower curtain. As such, we need to mop up the place after each shower so that the bathroom floor isn't too wet – at least the mop was provided :-). Also, there wasn't a lot of shower gel left when we got there but just enough (we had to pour out from one bathroom's bottle to the other bathroom bottle). Would have been better to have ample supply of that as compared to all the other apartments we have booked in Italy. Towels were a little worn out but still clean.
For the room with attached bath, it isn't easy to sleep 2 adults as the headboard covers half the queen bed which means both persons have to get on/off from the one side of bed.

  • Exceptional – Jana from Slovakia – 4 May 2023 (10/10)

Beautiful appartment in Cannareggio, perfect location, very quiet, but at the same time one minute from restaurants and caffes. The view from the rooms is splendid, directly on the canal. We realky enjoyed our stay. The owner was very nice, waited for us at vaporetto stop when we arrived, communication with him via whatsapp was really easy.

  • Excellent apartment at a great location – Helen from United Kingdom – 20 April 2023 (10/10)

We could not fault the apartment it was lovely. The facilities provided were excellent and we didn’t want to leave the beds they were so comfy.

What could be improved: It could do with a better toaster.

  • Excellent property in an excellent location for a family stay – Tokiwamatsu from Spain – 6 January 2023 (10/10)

The location is perfect – it's 15 minutes from Piazzale Roma and 5 minutes from San Marcuola. We arrived at Piazzale Roma by bus from the airport and took Vaporetto from there to San Marcuola. Marco, the property owner, was waiting for us, and walked along together to the apartment. The property was just as described on Booking.com. It was cozy and relaxing. It has everything we needed, including cooking utensils, plates, and cups, towels, etc. It was ideal for a family stay. Our 10-year-old twins were so happy with their own room. Marco, thank you for your kindness and flexibility. We fully enjoyed your property!

    What could be improved: None

  • Exceptional – Michal from Czech Republic – 2 October 2022 (10/10)

It is hard write what was good. Simply everything. Location, equipment and comfort. I would like to return.

What could be improved: Incorrect location on booking map.

  • A pleasant stay – Beverly from United States – 6 January 2025 (8/10)

The location fits our needs the best, close to the train station. The property has two bathrooms, which is considered luxurious in Europe. The owner is so kind and nice, his response to our request is literally immediate.

What could be improved: I would have given a 5-star review if they offered better quality towels.

  • Good location for a city break – Andreea from Romania – 22 December 2024 (8/10)

Location was great, 10 minutes from the bus station and the close to restaurants.

What could be improved: It was a bit cold inside, and we weren’t allowed to control the temperature in the apartment.

  • I would definitely use this appartement again when visiting Venice – Femfresh from United Kingdom – 24 June 2023 (8/10)

The location was perfect and it was a ten minute walk from thé busstation. Marco met us with the keys. Two bathrooms, two bedrooms, good size kitchen and lounge area. There was a safe in the appartement and Marco was happy for us to have a late check out, thank you

What could be improved: Both showers could do with a better door or curtain as after usage there was lots of water on the floor. I have let Marco know .
