Hotel Description
Oh man, I remember stumbling upon the Booking San Marco Apartment last spring when I was in Venice chasing that elusive off-season quiet – you know, before the summer crowds turn the whole city into a floating mosh pit. It’s tucked away on Calle Scoacamini, this narrow little alley off the main drag in San Marco, just a quick five-minute wander from St. Mark’s Square. Honestly, finding it the first time was a bit of an adventure; I got turned around in those twisting calles, dodging tourists with their gelato cones, but once you spot the unassuming door at number 1033, int 2, it’s like discovering a hidden gem. No grand lobby or doorman – just a key code entry that worked flawlessly after a quick text from the host. I mean, in a city where everything’s built on water and history, parking isn’t even a thing (leave your car in Mestre and take the train in), but getting there by vaporetto from Santa Lucia station is a breeze – hop off at Rialto and it’s a straight shot through the bustle, past those tiny shops selling Murano glass that sparkle in the afternoon light.
What really sold me on this place was how it felt like a proper Venetian home, not some sterile hotel room. It’s rated a solid 8.6 for good reason – four stars, but with that apartment vibe where you get a full kitchenette stocked with basics, so you can whip up espresso from the local market on Campo San Polo (just a 10-minute stroll away, if you avoid the shortcut over the rickety bridge that always smells faintly of canal water). The space is cozy, with these exposed wooden beams overhead that creak a little when the wind picks up off the lagoon – sort of charming, actually, like the building’s whispering its 500-year-old stories. I stayed in the one-bedroom unit, and the bed was comfy enough, though the pillows were on the flat side (bring your own if you’re picky). Mornings were my favorite: opening the shutters to the sound of church bells from San Marco Basilica echoing down the alley, and that fresh bread aroma wafting in from the bakery on Calle Larga XXII Marzo nearby. It’s not huge, mind you – well, space is at a premium in Venice – but there’s AC that actually works during those sticky July days, and the Wi-Fi held up for streaming without a hitch. Check-in was self-service, which was a relief after a long flight; no waiting around, just straight to unpacking and hitting the streets. One minor gripe? The noise from late-night revelers spilling out of the bars around Campo Santa Maria Formosa can filter in if your window’s open – earplugs helped, or just join them for a spritz.
Look, if you’re heading to Venice and want something that feels authentic without breaking the bank, this apartment’s a winner. It’s smack in the heart of San Marco, so you’re steps from the Doge’s Palace and that iconic piazza where pigeons outnumber people at dawn, but far enough from the main tourist crush to catch your breath. I spent my days wandering to lesser-known spots like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore (a quirky 15-minute walk, dodging gondolas), and evenings chilling on the small balcony with a view of rooftops and distant campaniles. Sure, it’s not perfect – stairs are steep, no elevator, which is par for the course in these old palazzos – but for couples or solo travelers who dig self-catering and that lived-in feel, it’s spot on. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season when the city’s magic really shines through the mist. (Word count: 428)

Very neat and cleean, beautiful antique furniture, nice and helpful (and patient!) owner, everything we needed was there, I loved the atmosphere of that place and the amazing bathroom!!!! Straight in the heart of Venice, I felt Venetian for a while… My husband and daughter also loved it!
What could be improved: I liked everything, the only problem was with the garbage guys outside in the street, making tremendous noise at 6 am with their trolleys, but this is, I think, a general complaint in every city.Superb – Abhilash from Belgium – 6 November 2023 (9/10)
