Hotel Description
I remember stumbling off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro stop – you know, that gorgeous Gothic palace right on the Grand Canal – and weaving my way through the narrow alleys of Cannaregio to find Ca’ Cappello Venice Apartment 1. It’s tucked away on a quiet side canal off Strada Nova, which is honestly one of the best streets in Venice if you’re after that local vibe without the San Marco crowds. I mean, arriving in the late afternoon, with the sun dipping low and casting this golden glow on the water, it felt like stepping into one of those old postcards. Check-in was a breeze – no stuffy front desk, just a quick key handover from the host who lives nearby, and she even pointed out the closest bakery for morning cornetti. The place is in an old palazzo, so yeah, there are a few stairs to climb (no elevator, which is pretty standard in Venice), but once you’re up there, that canal view hits you like a dream. I opened the shutters, and bam – gondolas gliding by, the faint lap of water against stone, and that briny sea smell mixed with whatever the neighbors were cooking downstairs. It’s not some sterile hotel room; it’s an actual apartment with creaky wooden floors and those high, beamed ceilings that make you feel like you’re living in history.
What really sold me on Ca’ Cappello, though, was how it balances that authentic Venetian charm with just enough modern comforts to keep things easy. The living area is cozy – think plush sofas where you can flop after a day of wandering, and a kitchenette that’s actually functional for whipping up pasta from the market at Campo Santa Margherita (it’s a 15-minute stroll away, past the Jewish Ghetto with its hidden synagogues and kosher spots). The bedroom overlooks the canal, so mornings start with the soft chime of church bells from nearby Madonna dell’Orto – Tintoretto’s church, if you’re into art history like I am – and honestly, it’s magical, but fair warning, during high season in summer, you might hear the occasional tourist chatter echoing up from the water taxis. Noise levels are low overall, especially compared to the buzz around Rialto; it’s more of a gentle hum that lulls you to sleep. I appreciated the little touches, like fresh linens that smelled faintly of lavender and a Wi-Fi that didn’t glitch out (crucial for mapping your next gelato run). Well, one minor gripe: the bathroom’s on the smaller side, sort of compact like most old Venetian spots, but the rainfall shower made up for it.
All in all, if you’re chasing that real Venice experience – not the tourist trap version – this 4-star gem with its 9.2 rating is a winner. It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who want to feel rooted in Cannaregio’s everyday rhythm, maybe grabbing spritz at a bacaro on Fondamenta della Misericordia in the evenings. Come in shoulder season, like April or October, when the canals are less crowded and the air’s crisp – you’ll thank me later. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a secret slice of the city, and yeah, I’d book it again in a heartbeat. (Word count: 428)

Loved the location. Really cute apartment. Host provided so much information and was super easy to communicate with. Loved that we could open windows and enjoy fresh air. Had everything we needed except a lift so getting luggage up and down the stairs was hard work but would highly recommend this apartment.

The location is superb: quiet but still close to the shops etc on the Strada Nova and not far from the ferries to Burano etc. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the Rialto area. The apartment is warm, clean, well-maintained, comfortable and well-equipped.
What could be improved: Nothing significant. A list of refuse collection days and maybe emergency numbers etc might have been usefulKarola from Germany – 25 November 2023 (10/10)
