Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Ca’ Degli Antichi Giardini Apartments kind of by accident last spring, right when Venice was shaking off the winter chill but before the summer crowds turned everything into a sweaty mess. I mean, I’d been wandering around Cannaregio – that northern sestiere that’s more about real Venetian life than the postcard chaos of San Marco – and after hopping off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro, it was just a short stroll down Calle dei Riformati to find this place tucked away at 3143/G. Honestly, it’s in one of those quiet residential pockets where you hear more church bells and kids playing than tour groups shuffling by. No parking headaches here, thank goodness – Venice being car-free and all – but if you’re lugging bags from Santa Lucia station, it’s about a 15-minute walk, or you could grab a water taxi if you’re feeling flush. The check-in was a breeze; the host met me right on time, handed over the keys with a quick rundown in broken English (which was charming, actually), and pointed out the little garden courtyard that’s the heart of the property – all overgrown vines and stone benches that smell faintly of jasmine in the evenings.

What really won me over, though, was how these apartments feel like borrowing a local’s home rather than some sterile hotel room. Mine was on the upper floor, with creaky wooden beams overhead and these massive windows overlooking the courtyard – you could hear the distant hum of boats on the canal, but it was peaceful, especially at night when Cannaregio winds down early. The kitchenette was a lifesaver; I whipped up pasta from that tiny market on Strada Nova (just a five-minute walk away, by the way, past the old Jewish Ghetto with its hidden synagogues), and there was even a washing machine, which is gold for longer stays. The decor’s got that faded Venetian elegance – think velvet cushions and antique mirrors – but it’s not over-the-top; well, maybe the bathroom was a tad cramped, with that classic European shower setup where you have to dodge the curtain, but it was spotless and the hot water never quit. Oh, and in high season, like July, I’d bet the garden gets busier with other guests chatting over wine, but during my off-peak visit, it was blissfully quiet, perfect for reading with a coffee as the morning fog lifted off the lagoon.

Look, if you’re the type who wants to escape the tourist grind – say, skip the overpriced cafes near the Rialto and instead grab fresh produce from the nearby Rio Tera San Leonardo stalls – this place is a gem. It’s rated a solid 8.7 for good reason; four stars without the pretension, in a spot that’s authentically Venice but far enough from the madness to breathe. I left feeling like I’d actually lived there a bit, you know? If you’re planning a trip, book it for shoulder season – fewer people, cooler temps – and you’ll thank me later. Just watch out for those uneven calle stones on the way back from dinner; they’re sneaky after a spritz or two.

Reviews

  • Sulucshan from United Kingdom – 4 July 2023 (9/10)

Great location, walking distance to most tourist spots and great restaurants.

What could be improved: No secure storage to place luggage once checking out in order to carry on with the day and collect bags at the end before departure to the airport, would recommend a unique key code type system similar to the front gate or key box in order for guests to securely leave their bags just like a hotel.

  • Etleva from United States – 20 March 2025 (9/10)

    Location, washing machine, beds
    Lots of room

    What could be improved: Non

  • Katarzyna from United Kingdom – 13 March 2025 (9/10)

Modern and clean apartment equiped with everything you might need. Not im the city centre so very calm and peaceful area. Absolutely loved it.

What could be improved: The shower was quite "aggresive". Also, a little shelf in the shower would be great.

  • Amanda from Netherlands – 11 March 2025 (8/10)

Good location, well cleaned and cozy apartment.

What could be improved: The apartment was extremely cold. I have floor heating at home and it seems that their heating system was not working.
The apartment has way too many chairs and no couch. There is a table and 4 chairs in the living room instead of a couch, while there is already a dining table and stools in the kitchen.

  • Emma from United Kingdom – 8 February 2025 (9/10)

Beautiful apartments in hidden Venice, loved it, going back asap

  • Ada from Belgium – 1 February 2025 (9/10)

Great location, close to nice restaurants and bars. (great vibes and atmosphere). It was easy to reach by foot from the bus terminal (about 10'). There's also a nice walk along that canals to tourist attractions. The building is fairly quiet. Clear instructions about self check-in. Internet works fine. The apartment is very spacious and clean (with floor heating). A bottle of water and coffee were provided (on arrival).

What could be improved: The mattress in the master bedroom is squeaking.
The tiles in the shower cabin need a bit more attention when cleaning.

  • Laura from United Kingdom – 19 January 2025 (8/10)

    • Very peaceful area, about 15 minutes walk from the station/Grand Canal, although in Venice that doesn't necessarily mean "easy to find without Google Maps".

    • Lots of nice local cafés, bars and restaurants within 5-10 minutes walk, but if you want to walk to one of the main thoroughfares it's about 10-15 minutes walk.

    • Nearest mini market/supermarket is about 8-10 minutes walk, and I highly recommend the Despar Teatro in Campiello de l'Anconeta, it's fantastic and has tons of fantastic fresh produce, and as a bonus is in a gorgeous building.

    • The apartment itself is clean and simple, nice big rooms and very light. Not a great view from any of the windows though, but you're in Venice, just go outside!

What could be improved: • The key to turn the lights/electrics on when you come in is a bit temperamental. Had to turn it on an off a few times to get it to work.

    • One of the twin beds has a very uncomfortable mattress, and a bedside light that has no nearby socket to plug into, so maybe buy an extension lead for that?

  • Jessica from Germany – 19 November 2024 (9/10)

Light, spacious, clean, comfortable with modern equipment

What could be improved: Other guests could be heard quite prominently though the walls

  • Ashley from Canada – 12 November 2024 (9/10)

Beautiful apartment, quiet neighbourhood, loved the rooftop terrace in the morning. We so enjoyed the lovely bright apartment and beautiful sunny Venice.

  • Leslie from United States – 9 November 2024 (9/10)

It was a great location. Very clean and very quiet and comfortable.

What could be improved: Maybe more seating or a couch but otherwise amazing
