I remember stumbling upon Ca’ degli Artisti almost by accident last spring – I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at Ca’ Rezzonico, you know, that stop that’s always a bit chaotic with tourists lugging suitcases over the bridges. But once I turned onto Fondamenta Pescheria in Dorsoduro, everything quieted down. This place is tucked right along the canal, in that artsy corner of Venice where the locals actually outnumber the day-trippers – think narrow alleys leading to hidden galleries and those little bacari bars serving cicchetti. The building itself is this charming old palazzo with faded frescoes peeking through the stucco, and honestly, stepping inside felt like walking into someone’s well-loved home rather than a hotel. Check-in was a breeze; the owner – this warm guy named Marco, I think – greeted me with a espresso and chatted about the neighborhood’s history, pointing out how the fondamente here used to buzz with fishmongers back in the day. No elevators, mind you – it’s Venice, so those steep stairs might catch you off guard if you’re hauling heavy bags, but they add to the authentic vibe, sort of like climbing into a time capsule.

What really won me over, though, were the rooms – mine overlooked the canal, with these massive windows that let in that soft, watery light Venice is famous for, and the decor? It’s all about the artists, as the name suggests: think exposed beams, quirky murals on the walls (nothing too pretentious, just fun nods to local painters), and beds that are ridiculously comfortable, like sinking into a cloud after a day of wandering. I mean, the bathroom had these handmade tiles that smelled faintly of salt and old stone – sensory overload in the best way. Breakfast was served in this cozy courtyard – fresh cornetti, prosciutto, and coffee strong enough to wake the dead – and it was quiet, especially in the off-season like April when I was there; no throngs of people, just the occasional ripple of a gondola passing by outside. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back rooms, and if you’re a light sleeper, you might hear the early-morning delivery boats chugging along the canal around dawn. But that’s Venice for you; it keeps things real. And location-wise, you’re steps from Campo Santa Margherita, where you can grab a spritz with actual Venetians in the evenings, or wander over to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection without crossing half the city – way better than being stuck in the San Marco crowds.

All in all, if you’re looking for a spot that feels like a genuine slice of Venetian life rather than some glossy tourist trap, Ca’ degli Artisti is it. I stayed four nights and left wishing for more – it’s got that rare mix of charm and comfort that makes you forget the high ratings (9.6, well-deserved) and just appreciate the little things, like watching the sunset reflect off the water from your window. Book it during shoulder season if you can; summers get packed, and the narrow streets heat up fast. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself for skipping the big chains and going for something this intimate.

  We were greeted by Tommaso at the bus station and he took as to the apartment. We were told main issues about the apartment (kitchen, air-conditioning etc.) and he gave us recommendations for restaurants and what to see in Venice. The apartment is spacious and the location is great. Everything at walking distance but still away from the most touristic streets. Also, only 10 minutes walk from where the airport bus arrives. If ever again in Venice, we will stay here!

  Lovely little apartment in a good quiet area, close to San Basilio boat buses, which will take you to the sight seeing places. The apartment is full of character – I loved the decadent furniture and painted Venetian murals in entrance and hall way.

  Locaction in quiet part of city but on the bank of the canal what was a big advantage of this flat. The view of canal and brightness in bigger room 🙂 Nearby is a waterbus station S. Basilio, there is a supermarket too. The host Tomasso picked us up from piazzale Roma and was very helpful and easy to contact on WhatsApp.
