Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Ca’ Del Monastero 5 while wandering through Santa Croce last spring, right after hopping off the vaporetto at San Stae – honestly, it’s one of those spots in Venice that feels like you’ve slipped into the city’s real rhythm, away from the San Marco madness. The address is tucked away on Santa Croce 1719, just a stone’s throw from the Grand Canal but hidden in those narrow calli that twist like old secrets. I remember arriving a bit sweaty from lugging my bag over the Ponte degli Scalzi from the train station – it’s about a 10-minute walk, which is a godsend in a city where everything involves water taxis or sore feet. The building itself is this charming old palazzo, with that weathered stone facade and wooden shutters that creak a little in the breeze off the canal. Stepping inside the apartment – well, it’s called “cosy” for a reason; it’s not sprawling, but for four guests, it fits like a glove, with two bedrooms that have these plush beds draped in crisp linens that smell faintly of lavender (I think they use some local detergent, or maybe it’s just the Venetian air). The living area opens up to a small kitchenette – nothing fancy, but stocked with basics like a stovetop and fridge, which saved me on those evenings when I didn’t want to brave the crowds at nearby spots like Osteria Mocenigo for cicchetti.

What really got me, though, was how it captures that authentic Venice vibe without trying too hard – you know, the kind where you hear the gentle lap of water against the walls at night, or catch the distant chime of church bells from Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio, which is literally around the corner for a quiet morning coffee. It’s rated an 8.4 for good reason; the place is spotless, with modern touches like Wi-Fi that actually works (a miracle in these historic buildings) and air conditioning that hums softly during those sticky summer afternoons. But let’s be real – no elevator, so if you’re hauling heavy luggage up the stairs, pack light or brace yourself. I appreciated the self-check-in with a code they email you; no awkward waiting around, especially if your flight’s delayed. And parking? Forget it – this is Venice, so leave the car at Piazzale Roma and embrace the boat life. There’s a bit of daytime bustle from folks heading to the Rialto Market across the canal, but by evening, it quiets down to that peaceful hush, interrupted only by the occasional gondola serenade drifting in. Oh, and the bathroom’s compact but has this rain shower that feels luxurious after a day of exploring – though the hot water can take a minute to kick in, sort of like the city’s own lazy pace.

All in all, if you’re after a four-star stay that feels more like crashing at a friend’s historic pad than a sterile hotel room, this is it. It’s perfect for a small group or family wanting to live like locals – whip up pasta with ingredients from the nearby Coop on Rio Terà San Leonardo, then unwind on the sofa with a view of the courtyard garden below. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option in high season (think May to September when Venice swells with tourists), but for the immersion – that mix of old-world charm and practical comforts – it’s worth every euro. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a hidden gem, and honestly, I’d book it again in a heartbeat for my next trip.

Reviews

  • Amazing location – Katharina from Australia – 11 July 2023 (7/10)

The location was amazing, away from the tourists, very easy to get around. Ferry terminal is only a 2min walk. The even better thing is you can’t get lost as you follow the dinosaur prints to the natural history museum which is directly opposite. the communication was also fab. Very comfortable beds.
The restaurants near by are fabulous, will certainly be back to Venice.

What could be improved: There should be a mention if you have satellite tv or Netflix you have to pay for it yourself or use your own account. The tv remotes should be checked for batteries as the ones in were leaking battery acid. The curtain next to the bed should be a darker curtain as the light comes through very bright in the morning and there are no shutters on the door.

  • nice apartment well located – Philip from Germany – 2 November 2022 (9/10)

it was a nice apartment and well equipped. especially the washing machine and dryer were of great help.
the rooms were in a quiet street and there were nice places to eat all around.

What could be improved: only a big blanket for the double bed and the shower was only ok.

  • Cozy apartment close to main city attractions. Highly recommended! – Nicolás from Greece – 3 January 2024 (10/10)

Beautiful place, in a more quiet and residential area but walking distance from rialto bridge and st marks square. There’s also a water taxi stop nearby so very easy to access from the airport.

  • great stay, felt like I live in Venice vs I am a tourist 🤗 – Ludmila from United States – 12 November 2022 (10/10)

location was great for me, loved the space, the restaurants and shops not too far from it

    What could be improved: N/A

  • Beautiful apartment and location – Jamie from United Kingdom – 13 September 2022 (10/10)

Location was perfect, there was a beautiful square just behind the apartment which had local supermarket, bars and restaurants lovely place not in a too touristy area.
The apartment was exactly how it was photographed and the handover of keys was brilliant very informative and friendly

    What could be improved: n/a

  • We had a great stay and recommend this place. – Michał from Poland – 4 August 2022 (10/10)

Quiet venue, yet close to the centre of Venice and close to vaporetto stations. The apartment very spacious and clean, kitchen well equipped, comfortable beds, washing machine, dishwasher. A lot of room to keep your stuff. Good Wi-Fi. Clothes drying rack was broken but was promptly exchanged by the owner.

What could be improved: Everything was fine.

  • Not a good choice – Pamela from Albania – 12 May 2024 (4/10)

    Friendly staff

What could be improved: Far away from the center. Old furnitures. Uncomfortable sofa and singles beds.I had to asked twice for some hand soap and some shampoo or shower gel. The worst experience because we had to fight every night with a lot of mosquitoes.

  • Anonymous from Romania – 21 June 2023 (4/10)

  • Superb – Celine from France – 2 March 2024 (9/10)
