Hotel Description

I remember stepping off the vaporetto at the San Stae stop – you know, that one right on the Grand Canal where the water taxis zip by like they’re late for dinner – and weaving my way through the narrow calle in Santa Croce. It’s not the flashy San Marco side of Venice, but honestly, that’s what I love about it; Santa Croce feels more like where real Venetians hang out, with spots like the little Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio just a five-minute stroll away, where locals grab espresso and kids play football against ancient church walls. The Ca’ Del Monastero 9 is tucked into this 17th-century building – well, it’s called a “ca’” which basically means palazzo, but don’t expect gold-plated everything; it’s got that lived-in charm with exposed beams and creaky wooden floors that sort of whisper history under your feet. I arrived in the late afternoon during shoulder season (avoid July if you hate crowds, trust me), and check-in was a breeze – the host met me at the door with a quick rundown, no fuss, though fair warning, there are stairs and no elevator, so pack light if you’re hauling suitcases.

Inside, this place is a godsend for groups – it’s billed as spacious for up to five, and yeah, it actually delivers without feeling crammed. The apartment’s got these tall windows overlooking a quiet courtyard (no canal views here, but that’s okay; it keeps the noise down from the boat traffic), and the kitchen’s fully kitted out with a proper espresso machine – I mean, who wants to hunt for breakfast when you can whip up your own cappuccino while the morning light filters in? The beds are comfy, with those crisp linens that smell faintly of lavender, and there’s even a washing machine, which saved me after a rainy day splashing through puddles near the Rialto Bridge (about a 15-minute walk, by the way, crossing over to San Polo). It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back bedroom, and if you’re sensitive to sounds, you might hear the occasional clatter from the nearby osteria until around 10 PM – but overall, it feels like your own slice of Venice, not some sterile hotel room. I spent evenings on the sofa with a glass of prosecco, listening to the distant church bells and the soft lap of water against stone; it’s those little sensory bits that make you forget you’re a tourist.

Look, if you’re traveling with family or friends and want to skip the overpriced hotels in the tourist traps, this 4-star spot in Santa Croce is a smart pick – that 8.8 rating isn’t hype; it’s earned from folks like me who appreciate the authenticity. You’re close enough to Piazzale Roma for easy airport bus access (no parking headaches, since cars are a no-go in Venice anyway), but far from the mad rush of St. Mark’s Square. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the air’s got that fresh, briny tang and the neighborhood’s blooming with wisteria. Just remember to wander the back alleys – you might stumble on a hidden bacaro for cicchetti that only locals know about.

Reviews

  • Lyons from United States – 19 June 2023 (9/10)

There was plenty of room and all the convenience we required at a reasonable price.

What could be improved: No coffee cups, only 3 water glasses, and we were charged an extra $50 cash upon arrival by our host for late check in that was unexpected. I did not see that information at any point during or after the booking and were told told by the host it was "clearly" marked on the website which I an still unable to find as I search. We had a difficult time getting to the island and over to the correct area with our luggage. We met our host at 20:13 and were told we needed to pay him an additional $50 cash for being late. In addition, the host didn't offer to assist in helping even my small child with carrying luggage up the multiple flights of stairs. He was informative but it's wasn't a good host experience.

  • Nikolay from Bulgaria – 26 August 2024 (9/10)

Good location. Spacious, a lot of room. Clean. Good level of equipment.

What could be improved: Expensive for four persons. Not everything was working properly – air conditioning not sufficient to cool the aprtment. The iron was not working.

  • Michael from United Kingdom – 5 July 2022 (9/10)

The staff were very friendly and helpful. They arranged a water taxi from the airport directly to the small piazza outside the apartment for €130 which turned out to be the standard fayre. They also were happy to bring additional pillows on request.
The apartment is on the top floor and was clean, spacious and well represented by the photos. The location is pleasant, fairly quiet compared to some areas of Venice. Once we figured out the best route (via Rialto market) we could walk to Rialto bridge in about 10 minutes.

What could be improved: My preference would be for a softer pillow, but really nothing to dislike about the apartment or the staff.

  • Arun from Germany – 17 May 2022 (9/10)

The apartment was ultra modern, and beautifully furnished! loved the stay, and it was a pleasure to come back to the apartment every evening after looking around Venice!

  • Jyke from Finland – 13 July 2023 (9/10)

Excellent location in a neighbourhood with a local vibe. Good café, bakery, osteria and a shop nearby, everything you need to get your holiday started. Vaporetto stops are also near and the main attractions are also close enough to reach by walking. The staff were helpful and fairly easy to reach. Two bedrooms and two bathrooms made it easy to share the apartment with friends.

What could be improved: We basically liked everything but want to mention a few points that might be helpful to others:
-There is an elevator that fits only one person with luggage. The elevator doesn't take you directly to the right floor, there are still some stairs to climb. This should be noted if travelling with small kids or if one has disabilities.
-The twin beds in the other room felt a little small

  • Munro from United Kingdom – 27 May 2022 (9/10)

Both Aline and Laura were extremely helpful before and during my stay. The flat was in a perfect location, it was exactly what we needed and in a gorgeous little square only a short

What could be improved: The flat was noisy at night, certainly not the fault of the hosts but the neighbours were loud. Although there was air conditioning in the flat, the English instructions were not very good for the instructions so we couldn't work it. Very small issues, the flat was great!

  • Stéphanie from France – 22 October 2024 (9/10)

Laura nous attendait à la sortie du bateau taxi, génial

    What could be improved: rien

  • Aleksandra from Poland – 1 July 2024 (8/10)

Przestronny apartament, świetny dla grupy. Lokalizacja blisko stacji tramwaju wodnego. Mieszkanie wyposażone we wszystko, co potrzebne na takim wyjazdzie.

  • Beatriz from Spain – 23 June 2024 (9/10)

    Ubicacion. Entorno. Tranquilidad

What could be improved: Me hubiera gustado un servicio de recogida de maletas hasta allí. Y quizá unas taquillas para el último dia

  • Bernard from France – 17 May 2023 (9/10)

What could be improved: Le calme du quartier. La belle décoration de l’appartement et son côté spacieux et très confortable.
