Hotel Description

I remember stepping off the vaporetto at the Accademia stop – you know, that big wooden bridge that arches over the Grand Canal – and weaving through those narrow calli in Dorsoduro to find Ca’ Margarita. It’s tucked away at 3664 Sestiere Dorsoduro, sort of hidden in plain sight among the old palazzos, which is perfect if you’re like me and want to escape the tourist crush around San Marco. Honestly, arriving in the late afternoon light, with the sun dipping behind the rooftops and that faint salty tang from the lagoon in the air, it felt like I’d stumbled into a quieter corner of Venice. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – this warm Italian couple who run the place – greeted me with espresso and a quick chat about the best cicchetti spots nearby, like that little bacaro on Campo Santa Margherita just a five-minute stroll away. No hassle with luggage since there’s no parking anyway (Venice being Venice), but they helped haul my bag up the stairs – yeah, it’s an old building, so elevators aren’t a thing, but that adds to the charm, I suppose.

What really won me over was how the hotel captures that authentic Venetian vibe without trying too hard. My room overlooked a tiny canal – not the Grand one, but a sleepy side channel where you hear the occasional gondola oar dipping in the water, especially at dusk when things quiet down. The decor’s all exposed beams and antique furniture, with these plush beds that make you forget you’re in a 4-star spot (rated 8.9 for good reason). Breakfast was a highlight – fresh cornetti, local cheeses, and coffee strong enough to wake the dead, served in a courtyard that smells of blooming jasmine in spring. I mean, it’s not massive, but that’s the point; it’s intimate, with only a handful of rooms, so you don’t feel like you’re in some impersonal chain. Well, one minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but hey, you’re in Venice – put the phone down and wander over to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, literally around the corner on Fondamenta Venier dei Leoni. And if you’re there in off-season, like November, it’s blissfully quiet, no summer crowds jamming the streets.

All in all, if you’re after a place that feels lived-in and connected to the real Dorsoduro scene – think art galleries, university vibes, and those long walks along the Zattere promenade with gelato in hand – Ca’ Margarita is a solid pick. It’s not the flashiest, but that’s what makes it special; you leave feeling like you’ve actually experienced Venice, not just ticked it off a list. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for those lazy mornings listening to church bells echo from Santa Maria della Salute nearby.

Reviews

  • Very good location , friendly staff, the apartment has classical charm of Venice – Kenneth from Sweden – 2 April 2025 (10/10)

The property is very close to the plazza Roma parking lot, about 8 mins walk. And it is inside the old town. The old lady who was waiting me and explained everything to me was super friendly! And the apartment is super clean too! We can leave our luggage until 2pm even after we checkout the apartment!

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Excellent affordable apartment where you can enjoy Venice like a local. – Anthony from Spain – 25 December 2024 (9/10)

Spacious apartment spread over three floors, amazing location on one of Venice’s most appealing campos, very accommodating host, well-equipped for an extended stay. Supermarket and bakery close by, and the apartment stayed warm despite cold December weather.

What could be improved: There’s a bar next door that occasionally gets pretty noisy, but the noise comes from the street, not through the building, and doesn’t reach the bedrooms. We liked the traditional decor, but a more comfortable sofa would be a plus.

  • Exceptional – Mihaip86 from Romania – 1 November 2024 (10/10)

    Great location, quite, good Wi-Fi.

What could be improved: No issues.

  • Comfy, multi-level apartment in central Venice! – Annie from United States – 21 September 2024 (10/10)

Location was central, above a small square, and very spacious. Beds were comfy and we had everything we needed to make us feel right at home. Very clean and best of all the host was very available via WhatsApp for any questions or needs we had. Can’t wait to come back!

What could be improved: Everything was wonderful. No complaints. PS there are stairs in the apartment and no elevator.

  • A superb Italian-styled home close to most Venice’s attractions – Yung from United Kingdom – 6 September 2024 (9/10)

It's a great holiday let, traditional house that made us feel like living as locals. Very responsive host who stayed in touch with us before and throughout our stay. The whole house was well-decorated with a fully-functioned kitchen and two bathrooms. Bedrooms are on different floors that allow a greater privacy for groups. The property is close to the train station, the Ponte dell'Accademia and less than 20 minutes walk to both the San Marco and San Polo districts.

What could be improved: We were not entirely sure about the address to find the property, not to the fault of the host but because of the confusing street naming in Venice in general. The host was accessible via a whatsapp call so make sure that you have data on your phone so that you could speak with the host for further instructions.

Easy to get there, about 9 minutes from the car park, good communication with the owner, fantastic location, supermarket and shops 2 minutes away, nice restaurants near the apartment. Comfortable and tradițional house, equipped with everything you might need.
