Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Ca’ Martina almost by accident last spring when I was dodging the usual Venice crowds – honestly, if you’re tired of the San Marco shuffle, Cannaregio is where it’s at, a neighborhood that’s got that real Venetian vibe without all the selfie sticks. I arrived via the vaporetto from Santa Lucia station, which is just a 10-minute walk away if you’re not lugging too much baggage (pro tip: pack light, those cobblestone calli like Calle Dei Riformati can be a workout on your suitcase wheels). The hotel’s tucked into this narrow alley – 3143/f, to be exact – right off the beaten path but close enough to the Strada Nova for grabbing a quick spritz or some cicchetti at a local bacaro. First impression? It’s one of those classic Venetian palazzos that’s been spruced up without losing its old-world charm – think exposed wooden beams and those slightly uneven marble floors that creak just a bit underfoot, like the building’s whispering stories from the 1700s. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – a mix of locals who actually know the back canals – handed over my key with a smile and a recommendation for a hidden gelateria nearby (Gelateria Il Doge, if you’re wondering, their pistachio is unreal). No fuss, no long lines, even though it was edging into busy season.
What really sold me on Ca’ Martina, though, was how it feels like a cozy hideaway in a city that can overwhelm you with its grandeur. The rooms – I had one on the second floor overlooking a quiet courtyard – are spacious for Venice standards (I mean, we’re not talking about massive suites, but you won’t feel cramped like in some of those tiny spots near the Rialto). There’s this fresh, slightly salty scent from the nearby lagoon that drifts in when you crack the window, mixed with the morning aroma of espresso from the breakfast spread downstairs. Speaking of which, the buffet’s nothing fancy, but it’s solid – fresh pastries, prosciutto, and those little yogurts that taste like they came straight from an Italian nonna’s kitchen. Amenities-wise, it’s got that 4-star polish with free Wi-Fi that actually works (a miracle in old buildings like this), air conditioning that hums softly without drowning out the distant church bells, and bathrooms with rain showers that make you linger a bit too long. Oh, and if you’re into history, it’s a stone’s throw from the Jewish Ghetto – well, more like a five-minute stroll – where you can wander the synagogues and grab kosher bites at places like Gam Gam. Noise levels are blissfully low at night; Cannaregio quiets down after dark, unlike the party vibes over in Dorsoduro. That said, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional boat horn from the Grand Canal might sneak in – but hey, that’s Venice for you.
All in all, with its 9.2 rating, Ca’ Martina’s the kind of place I’d recommend to friends who want an authentic stay without the tourist trap prices (rooms start reasonable, especially off-season in winter when the fog rolls in and everything feels magical). It’s not perfect – parking’s nonexistent, obviously, since cars are a no-go here, and the elevator’s on the smaller side for big groups – but those are minor gripes in a spot that lets you live like a local. If you’re planning a trip, aim for shoulder season like April or October; fewer crowds mean you can actually hear the water lapping against the walls while sipping wine on their tiny terrace. Trust me, it’s the sort of hotel that makes you linger an extra day, just wandering the calli and forgetting the world outside.

What could be improved: Everything was great! Will be back!Great Location, very helpful hosts, cool/comfy apartment – Steven from United Kingdom – 26 August 2024 (9/10)
The host helped us out immensely by allowing us to leave our luggage at the property both before our official check-in and after our official check-out. We arrived in Venice by train and left by Ferry, so this allowed us to make the most of the days that we arrived/departed.
The apartment itself had a nice outdoor seating area and both bedrooms were cool and comfortable. The kitchen had everything that we needed to cook. The location was good for the train station and being in the north-west corner of Venice, it was quieter and less touristy than most of the city. The canals on the surrounding streets looked just as pretty though.
It is very close to a supermarket and Vaporetto stop, which was also very useful!
