Hotel Description

You know, wandering into Ca’ Moretta for the first time felt like stumbling upon a hidden gem in the heart of Venice’s San Marco district – and I mean that literally, because finding it on Calle Veste San Marco is half the adventure. I arrived late afternoon via vaporetto from Santa Lucia station, dragging my suitcase over those uneven cobblestones, and honestly, the narrow alleyways can be a bit disorienting if you’re not paying attention to the signs. But once you spot the unassuming entrance – tucked between a little mask shop and one of those family-run bacari where locals grab cicchetti – it’s like stepping into a cozy, old-world apartment rather than some sterile hotel. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this warm Venetian guy named Marco (yeah, fitting), greeted me with a glass of prosecco and chatted about the best times to avoid the crowds at Piazza San Marco, which is just a five-minute stroll away. No elevators here – it’s a classic 3-star setup in a historic building, so be prepared for stairs – but the place has that authentic charm, with exposed wooden beams and views over the rooftops that make you forget the hassle.

What really won me over, though, was how it balances that intimate, lived-in feel with practical touches that matter when you’re navigating Venice. The rooms aren’t huge – mine was a snug double with a four-poster bed and these heavy velvet curtains that blocked out the early morning light from the canal below – but they’re spotless, with air conditioning that actually works (a godsend in humid July). I loved the little breakfast nook downstairs, where they serve fresh cornetti and cappuccino; it’s nothing fancy, but sitting there with the faint smell of espresso and the sound of church bells from nearby San Moisè drifting in made mornings magical. You’re right in the thick of things – Rialto Bridge is an easy 10-minute walk across the ponte, and if you’re into hidden spots, duck into Campo Santo Stefano for gelato at that underrated place locals swear by. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly quiet at night once the day-trippers clear out, though you might hear the occasional gondola serenade echoing off the walls. Oh, and fair warning: no parking, obviously – this is Venice, so leave the car on the mainland and embrace the water bus life. It’s rated 8.8 for a reason; it’s not perfect (the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back rooms), but it feels genuine, like staying with a friend who knows all the shortcuts.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that immerses you in real Venetian life without the tourist trap vibes, Ca’ Moretta is worth it – especially off-season in fall when the fog rolls in and the streets empty out. I stayed three nights last October, and it left me with that rare mix of relaxation and excitement; well, sort of – minus the sore feet from all the walking. Book it if you want to wake up to the hum of the city, grab a spritz at a nearby osteria, and feel like you’ve got Venice figured out, even if just for a weekend.

Reviews

  • Stylish apartment in the heart of Venice – Iain from United Kingdom – 6 July 2025 (9/10)

Lovely apartment with all the facilities you'd want for a self catering stay. TV and A/C in both bedrooms double and twin), very well equipped kitchen (fridge/freezer, microwave, oven, coffee machine and dining table, plus all the kitchenware).

Good sized, nicely decorated rooms with plenty of storage and extras like a PS3 and CD player.

Location is outstanding, very close to St Marks Square, grand canal and the main shopping and restaurant area. Less than a minute from the Theatro (worth doing the tour).

What could be improved: The only real issue we had was that the apartment is up about six flights of stairs and for someone not in top fitness in 40 deg heat, this was a real issue, especially on arrival with heavy suitcases. Of course, there's nothing they can do about it, and for many people this won't be a problem, but it is something worth knowing. Otherwise, the shower temperature is tricky to control and the water pressure is quite low.

  • Very good – Roger from Brazil – 17 November 2024 (8/10)

large place, well located, very comfortable beds

What could be improved: room without a door, bad smell from the bathroom, toilet flushing sometimes has problems, coffee machine doesn't work

  • Loved every minute of our stay. Beautiful location, people and place to visit – Jacqueline from Australia – 17 September 2024 (10/10)

We received a warm welcome from Riccardo on arrival. Very easy to find. Beautiful clean and spacious apartment with view of gondolas passing at end of street

What could be improved: Whilst there were 80 steps to climb it was well worth it for apartment, location close to all shops around Marco Pollo

  • Superb – Alexandra from Germany – 6 August 2024 (9/10)

Wonderful, charming host, who was helpful with waiting on us to arrive, giving us recommendations, and being flexible with us during our checkout. Apartment smelled super clean, beds were clean and comfy, loved the location. I'd stay again. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

  • Amazing ❤️ – Sabrina from Canada – 31 July 2024 (9/10)

Beautiful apartment & very spacious in perfect location. The owner was very kind.

What could be improved: It’s on the 5-6th floor and no elevator. Was tricky with our luggage.

  • Exceptional – Richard from United Kingdom – 12 July 2024 (10/10)

The apartment was great and in a fantastic location for all the main attractions within Venice. The hosts were more than willing to assist us with locating some delayed luggage.

  • Superb – Louise from Australia – 21 June 2024 (9/10)

Everything was amazing, beautiful property and the owner was lovely and very helpful

  • I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to visit Venice. Excellent – Watson from Belgium – 28 May 2024 (10/10)

The host was lovely greeting us with a bottle of cava she also explained everything we may need ,even down to where to find the best supermarket. The apartment was lovely, just like a home from home, with everything you need. It was also excellent value for money as its in the San Marco area which is the more expensive place to stay, as its near all the main attractions but this apartment was very reasonable. All in all an excellent place to stay.

What could be improved: The only down side is there is no lift and its 5 flights of stairs ,this was no problem for us but if you have poor mobility this could be an issue

  • Superb – Zena from United Kingdom – 6 January 2024 (9/10)

Location excellent. Lovely large apartment well equipped and comfortable

What could be improved: Bathroom smelt a bit probably due to drains

  • Excellent – Charalampos from Greece – 29 December 2023 (10/10)

    Everything, great location, spacious, comfortable

    What could be improved: Nothing
