I remember stumbling upon Ca’ Neldo – VeniseJeTAime after weaving through those narrow calli in Castello – you know, that eastern neighborhood in Venice that’s a bit less mobbed than San Marco but still feels like the real deal. It’s tucked away in Sotoportego e Corte Delfina, this quiet little courtyard off the main drag, and honestly, finding it was half the fun. I mean, Venice isn’t exactly car-friendly – no parking to worry about, thank goodness – so I hopped off the vaporetto at Arsenale and wandered over, dodging the occasional pigeon and inhaling that briny canal scent mixed with fresh espresso from a tiny bar around the corner. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, all weathered stone and arched doorways, and when I pushed open the door, it was like stepping into someone’s elegant old home. Check-in was a breeze; the owner – this warm Italian guy who speaks perfect English – handed me a key with a handwritten map of hidden spots nearby, like that underrated gelateria on Via Garibaldi where locals queue up for pistachio scoops in the evenings.

What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that old-world charm with just enough modern comfort to make you forget you’re in a centuries-old city. My room overlooked the corte – super peaceful, especially at night when the only sounds are distant church bells or maybe a gondolier humming faintly from the Rio di San Daniele nearby. The bed was plush, with those crisp linens that smell faintly of lavender (they must use some local detergent), and the bathroom had this massive rain shower that was a godsend after a day of traipsing around. It’s rated 9.6 for a reason – four stars, but it feels more intimate than flashy. Breakfast was served in a cozy communal area downstairs, nothing over-the-top, just fresh croissants, prosciutto, and strong coffee that hits the spot. Oh, and a small heads-up: like most spots in Venice, there are stairs – no elevator – so pack light if you’re not up for lugging suitcases. But well, that’s part of the adventure, right? I spent one evening just lounging on the terrace (they have a shared one with views over rooftops), sipping prosecco and chatting with other guests about dodging the tourist crowds in high season – summer gets nuts, but Castello stays relatively chill even then.

Look, if you’re heading to Venice and want something authentic without the San Marco price tag or chaos, Ca’ Neldo is it. It’s about a 15-minute stroll to the Biennale gardens or the vaporetto for Murano trips, and you can easily hit spots like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore for that quirky book-stacking vibe. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a secret – sort of like Venice itself, you know? A minor nitpick: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back rooms during peak hours, but who comes here to scroll anyway? Book it for a romantic getaway or solo wander; you’ll thank me later.

  The welcome in the beginning, we were rec'd in person with someone who helped explain everything, it was very easy – and best of all the appartment was so much better in person than in the pictures (which were already very nice). Wonderful ! Great location as well – outside of all the tourist hubbub but easy to access center and close to nice restaurants and bars. Fully recommend !

  Spacious attractive modern rooms, and enough separate bedrooms and bathrooms for two kids and their partners. Well equipped, quiet, very convenient to water taxis and around the corner from the Laguna. It’s right next to Garibaldi street, which is lined with the restaurant and bars. Yet, it was far enough from San Marco that we were away from the tourist throngs, so the vibe was very chill (though it was also the end of tourist season – not sure what middle of summer would have been like). Right next door to the Biennale, which was why we came to Venice. Florence, the property contact, was very helpful and responsive.
