Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Ca Penini – canal view almost by accident during one of those endless Venice wanders, you know, when you’re dodging the San Marco crowds and end up in Castello, which feels like the real deal – quieter, with locals actually living their lives instead of just posing for selfies. It’s tucked away on Sestiere Castello 2430, right in the heart of that neighborhood, and honestly, getting there was half the fun. I hopped off the vaporetto at Arsenale – that’s the stop you want if you’re coming from the train station; it’s about a 10-minute stroll through these narrow calli that twist like they were drawn by a tipsy artist. No cars, obviously – Venice being Venice – so you’re wheeling your suitcase over bridges and past those little bacari where folks grab spritzes in the afternoon. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, all faded brick and wrought-iron balconies, and when I checked in, the owner (I think her name was Maria? Super friendly, anyway) handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best nearby gelato spot on Via Garibaldi – it’s called Gelateria Nico, by the way, and their pistachio is worth the detour. Oh, and fair warning: it’s an old place, so expect some stairs – no elevator, which might be a drag if you’ve got heavy bags, but it adds to that authentic charm, I suppose.

What really sold me, though, was the canal view – I mean, the name doesn’t lie. My room overlooked this skinny little rio, and mornings started with the gentle lap of water against the walls, mixed with the distant hum of a vaporetto chugging by. It’s not the Grand Canal glamour, but that’s what makes it special; it’s intimate, like peeking into Venice’s backyard. The place is rated a solid 9.7 for a reason – four stars, but it feels more boutique than chain-hotel stiff. The rooms are cozy, with those high ceilings and exposed beams that scream old-world Italy, and the bed? Like sinking into a cloud after a day of pounding pavements. Breakfast was simple but spot-on: fresh cornetti, strong coffee, and fruit on a terrace that catches the sun just right in spring – though in summer, it can get steamy, so aim for shoulder season if you hate the humidity. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful at night; you might hear a gondolier crooning faintly, but nothing disruptive. Well, except maybe the church bells from nearby San Pietro di Castello – they toll early, but hey, that’s Venice waking you up. I did notice the Wi-Fi could be spotty in the back rooms – not a deal-breaker, but pack a book if you’re a streamer.

Look, if you’re after that postcard-perfect Venice without the tourist crush, Ca Penini is your spot. It’s close enough to the action – a 15-minute walk to Piazza San Marco, or hop on the number 1 vaporetto for the scenic route – but far enough that you feel like you’ve discovered something genuine. Families might love the spacious suites, couples the romantic views, and solo travelers (like me, on that trip) the easy vibe for recharging. Sure, it’s not flawless – the bathroom was a tad compact, and prices spike in high season – but for the memories of sipping prosecco by the canal as the sun sets? Totally worth it. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in autumn when the fog rolls in and the whole place feels like a dream.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Great stay and location – Slaughter84 from Belgium – 3 November 2024 (9/10)

Great location, nice open door to the canal

What could be improved: LED display on the other side of the canal, but this was temporary associated with a pavillion as part of the Biennale. Could manage it by closing the canal shutters at night

  • We had a brilliant holiday and loved the apartment – Daniel from United Kingdom – 15 October 2024 (10/10)

Location was perfect- in a quiet area but only a short walk from San Marco and the waterfront
Lovely setting overlooking the canal. The host was really helpful and friendly

  • Superb – Michael from United Kingdom – 15 July 2024 (9/10)

    There was no breakfast.
    Facilities were very good.

What could be improved: Finding the property was a little chalanging.

  • I love the room with canal view. The facilities and supplies are beyond my expectation. – Sabrina from Taiwan – 18 June 2024 (10/10)

I love the view with canal view and the well-prepared facilities including blue tooth speaker, cooking tools and seasonings.

What could be improved: It would be helpful if more instructions can be provided in terms of how to use the facilities such as AC, dishwasher, and washing machine. It took us some time to figure out how to use these machines that are not familiar to non-Italian foreigners.

  • Exceptional – Lynette from Australia – 11 June 2024 (10/10)
