Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Ca Spada almost by accident during one of those misty autumn trips to Venice when the crowds thin out a bit – honestly, that’s the best time to go if you want to avoid the summer crush around San Marco. Tucked away in the Castello sestiere, right off a quiet side canal on what I think is Calle del Dose (or was it Calle de le Rasse? Anyway, it’s super close to the Arsenale vaporetto stop), this place feels like you’ve stepped into a real Venetian home rather than some glossy tourist trap. I remember lugging my bag over a couple of those arched bridges – no cars in Venice, obviously, so you’re walking or boating everywhere – and spotting the hotel’s unassuming entrance with its old wooden door and brass knocker. Inside, it’s all exposed brick and beamed ceilings that whisper stories from the 18th century, I mean, you can practically smell the history mixed with that faint, briny canal scent that seeps in from outside. The check-in was a breeze; the owner – this chatty local guy named Marco, I think – handed over the keys with a quick tip on where to grab the best cicchetti nearby, like at that little bacaro on Via Garibaldi just a five-minute stroll away.
What really won me over, though, was how the rooms balance that old-world charm with just enough modern comfort to make you feel pampered without overdoing it. Mine overlooked a narrow rio – yeah, one of those sleepy canals where you hear the occasional splash of an oar or the coo of pigeons at dawn – and it had these plush linens that felt like sinking into a cloud after a day of wandering. Breakfast is served in this cozy courtyard (well, more like a sun-dappled patio when the weather cooperates), with fresh cornetti and cappuccinos that rival anything in the city – none of that watery tourist stuff. And get this, it’s surprisingly quiet at night; Castello isn’t as rowdy as Dorsoduro or Cannaregio after dark, so you actually get some peace, though I did hear a distant church bell from San Pietro di Castello tolling on the hour, which sort of added to the magic. That said, if you’re not great with stairs – there are a few flights, no elevator that I recall – it might be a minor hassle, especially with heavy luggage. But the staff were quick to help, and the free Wi-Fi was solid enough for streaming those late-night Netflix binges when jet lag hits.
All in all, if you’re after that authentic slice of Venice without the overwhelming hustle – think lazy mornings exploring the Biennale gardens nearby or popping into hidden spots like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore – Ca Spada is a gem. It’s got that 4-star polish with a 9.4 rating that feels earned, not hyped, and at coordinates basically plunking you in the heart of Castello (45.434049536395925, 12.349531290985091, if you’re mapping it out), you’re far enough from the Grand Canal chaos to breathe easy. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season when the fog rolls in and the whole place feels like your own secret hideaway.

The property was in a perfect location. A quiet area but close enough to all the local places of interest. It was tastefully decorated and the owners had thought about everything. It was immaculately clean and the bed was so comfortable and welcoming after a long day walking and exploring .

Exceptional – Ivana from Croatia – 7 August 2024 (10/10)
We were at the end of July for the Venice Biennale, so the location was perfect for visiting both main sites: the Gardini and the Arsenale – only a 5 minute walk.
Also, there is no crowd in this part of Venice, so you will get the real atmosphere of old Venice, but still you are 20 min walk from Piazza San Marco.
The host Alessandra was helpful with suggestions and communicated everything on time.
There was four of us and apartment has two rooms with king size bed and own bathrooms and each room has air con.
