Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Ca’ Toletta almost by accident last spring, right after hopping off the vaporetto at the Ca’ Rezzonico stop – you know, that grand palazzo museum just a stone’s throw away. Dorsoduro isn’t the mad rush of San Marco, thank goodness; it’s more like Venice’s artsy, laid-back cousin, with those narrow calli winding past galleries and little workshops where you can smell the fresh paint from artists’ studios. The hotel’s tucked into this quiet corner at 1220 Sestiere Dorsoduro, and honestly, finding it felt like discovering a secret – no neon signs or tourist traps, just a discreet door in one of those weathered Venetian buildings that creak with history. I mean, Venice is all about getting lost, but this spot makes it easy to navigate without the hassle; you’re a quick walk from the Accademia Bridge if you want to cross over to the action, or you can just wander to Campo Santa Margherita for a spritz at one of those student hangouts where the locals actually outnumber the visitors. Checking in was a breeze – the staff, this friendly bunch who seemed like they’d lived in the neighborhood forever, handed over the keys with a chat about the best time to avoid the cruise ship crowds (early mornings or late afternoons, apparently). No elevator, though – well, it’s an old palazzo, so expect to haul your bags up a flight or two of those worn marble stairs, which added to the charm, I suppose, but might tire you out after a day of exploring.

What really won me over was how the place feels like a slice of real Venetian life, not some polished chain hotel. My room overlooked a tiny canal – nothing grand like the Grand Canal, but that gentle lapping of water against the stones at night was better than any white noise machine, and the air had that briny, slightly musty scent that screams authentic Venice. The decor’s all exposed beams and antique furnishings, sort of cozy and elegant without trying too hard, and the bed? Oh man, after pounding the pavements all day, sinking into those crisp linens was heaven. Breakfast is served in this sunlit courtyard – think fresh cornetti, strong espresso, and maybe some prosciutto if you’re lucky – and it’s included, which is a godsend in a city where everything costs an arm and a leg. I chatted with the owner one morning; turns out the building dates back to the 1700s, and they’ve kept it family-run, so the service feels personal, like they’re actually invested in your stay. That said, the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms – I mean, ancient stone doesn’t play nice with signals – but who comes to Venice to scroll Instagram all day? And noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet compared to the Rialto side; you might hear a distant church bell or a gondolier humming, but nothing disruptive, especially off-season when Dorsoduro empties out a bit.

Look, if you’re the type who wants to escape the selfie-stick hordes and actually soak in Venice’s soul, Ca’ Toletta is your spot – it’s got that 4-star polish with a 9.3 rating that feels earned, not inflated. I’ve stayed in fancier places, but this one left me with stories, like that evening I wandered back from a gallery opening at the Guggenheim (just a 10-minute stroll away) and collapsed into bed feeling like I’d time-traveled. Sure, it’s not dirt cheap, especially in high season when the whole city swells, but for the peace and the proximity to those hidden gems – think tucked-away bacari for cicchetti or quiet spots along the Zattere promenade – it’s worth every euro. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in autumn when the fog rolls in and makes everything even more magical.

Overall we love the property. Excelente location, near restaurants, pastry shops, local shops. House felt really homey, perfect for a small family or group of friends.

Lovely location. The apartment has character. Very helpful host. Great outdoor space.

What could be improved: Some things could be updated, .e.g more modern kitchen equipment. I’m not a fan of Italian style bed clothing and the huge pillows.

  • Moritz from Germany – 10 November 2024 (10/10)

Beautiful, authentic apartment in fantastic location

  • Ring from Italy – 10 October 2024 (9/10)

    Location!!
Giovanni, who met us, was incredibly proactive and attentive.
The kitchen had everything. There was an outdoor patio, a convenient ½bath in addition to the full bathroom was a bonus.

What could be improved: The place could use a coat of paint.

In the evenings the small bedroom smelled smoky, like cigarette smoke was seeping in somewhere.

    Everything else was fine.

fantastic stay , lovely place in a great location, spotlessly clean, all amenities, lots of character. Nice quiet place, great little coffee places and restaurants nearby, easy to walk to all the sights. Lovely to have some outside space , and wonderful helpful host. We’ll be back!

    What could be improved: Nothing!

  • Sanju from United Kingdom – 18 September 2024 (9/10)

Giovane/John messaged me 2 days prior to my arrival which provided me a reassurance. He kept me updated and helped me navigate the google map to reach the property. He guided me on using public transport once I reached Venezia S lucia station. He also accepted for an early check in, unfortunately long queue to get into the waterbus delayed my arrival. On approaching the property, John was there within a minute or so. He provided the tour of the house, showed me the switches which are located in inconspicuous areas, showed me where things are in the kitchen and how to operate heating system should I needed it. He was quick to answer my every query. It felt scary upon arrival due to small allies and dilapitated external appearance but the property is very well maintained, clean and with modern bathroom and kitchen. After travelling through venice, you'll realise the house is not an exception and infact its one of the charms of this ancient city. Just one minor thing, there is no iron in the house. Otherwise, would have been perfect.

What could be improved: Nothing to dislike

  • Pia from Switzerland – 26 June 2024 (9/10)

We loved staying in this authentic Venetian home in the heart of Venice with lots of wonderful restaurants close by.
Giovanni is a great host! He was super responsive and gave us great recommendations. We‘ll be back!

What could be improved: The neighbors were a little noisy

  • Mc from United Kingdom – 8 May 2024 (10/10)

The property had such a quirky feel with some original features. Was a fantastic location and the host couldn’t have done enough to accommodate us despite a very late and delayed arrival. Would 100% stay again.

  • Bishwamon from United Kingdom – 7 May 2024 (9/10)

    1) The property is located within walking distance of ferry stops
    2) There are several shops and places to eat that stay open quite late at night.
    3) The house is cozy and has a lovely backyard with seating arrangements, just perfect for a small open air tea break or party.
    4) There is an additional WC downstairs which really helps when you are a larger group.
    5) The host was proactive and extremely helpful. He remained in touch through the entire trip and made sure we were assisted in case we needed anything

What could be improved: No house is perfect so the multitude of merits does cover any minor inconvenience that may have caused. So there is nothing we disliked to be honest.

  • Rahul from United Arab Emirates – 1 May 2024 (9/10)

Very good place for family. Excellent host Giovanni
