Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at the Ca’ Pesaro stop – you know, the one that’s just a quick hop from the train station if you’re coming in from the mainland – and weaving my way through those narrow Dorsoduro alleys to find Ca’ Venar. It’s tucked away on Fondamenta del Soccorso, right along this quiet little canal that doesn’t get the mad tourist rush like over in San Marco. Honestly, that was my first sigh of relief; Venice can feel like a human pinball machine in high season, but here in Dorsoduro, it’s more like stumbling into a neighborhood where locals actually live – think artists and academics sipping espresso at tiny bars on Campo Santa Margherita, which is just a five-minute stroll away. The building itself is this classic Venetian palazzo, all weathered brick and arched windows, and when I pushed open the door, there was this faint scent of old wood and fresh coffee wafting through. Check-in was a breeze – the staff, a mix of friendly Italians who switched effortlessly to English, handed over my key with a quick tip about the best time to hit the nearby Guggenheim (early mornings, before the crowds build). No massive lobby or anything flashy; it’s intimate, like staying in a well-kept family home, which sort of sets the tone for the whole place.
What really won me over, though, was how the hotel nails that balance between old-world charm and the stuff you actually need as a traveler. My room overlooked the canal – nothing grand like the Grand Canal views, but peaceful, with the occasional gondola gliding by and the soft lap of water against the stones that lulls you to sleep at night (earplugs might help if you’re a light sleeper, what with the odd delivery boat chugging past at dawn). The bed was plush, king-sized, with those crisp white linens that feel luxurious after a day of pounding pavements, and the bathroom had this rainfall shower that was a godsend for rinsing off the summer humidity. Breakfast is served in a cozy courtyard – well, more like a sun-dappled terrace – with fresh pastries, prosciutto, and cappuccinos that rival anything at the corner cafes. I mean, it’s not a huge spread, but it’s thoughtful, and they even had gluten-free options without me having to ask. Exploring from here was easy; you’re steps from the Zattere promenade for sunset walks along the Giudecca Canal, or you could wander to the Accademia Bridge for that iconic view without elbowing through hordes. One minor gripe? The stairs are steep and there’s no elevator – classic Venice issue – so pack light if mobility’s a concern, especially in the off-season when things are quieter and you might have the place almost to yourself.
All in all, if you’re after a slice of authentic Venice without the gimmicks, Ca’ Venar is a gem – that 9.5 rating isn’t hype. It’s got this understated elegance that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special, not just another hotel. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in shoulder season like April when the canals smell fresher and the neighborhood’s jazz spots on nearby Fondamenta delle Zattere come alive without the peak crowds. Sure, it’s not the cheapest four-star spot, but for the location, the personal touches from the staff (they recommended a hidden osteria that became my favorite meal), and that rare quiet in a city that never sleeps, it’s worth every euro. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like you actually experienced Venice, not just ticked it off a list.

Location and all amenities were the absolute best. The balcony view was superb! Very quiet, safe neighborhood, within 20 minutes of most major tourist sites. Some fabulous restaurants in the area that had we more time, would have visited a second time. Antonina, our host, was responsive, provided extra attention to our stay including recommended restaurants and items of interest in the area. Will definitely want to stay here again when we visit next.

Roof top terrace at sunrise and sunset! 👌Karen from Germany – 13 August 2024 (10/10)
The apartment was beautiful. Plenty of room for a family of four and great quiet location. A 25 minute walk to St Mark’s Square along the waterfront so just outside the main, and expensive, tourist area. Close to water bus stops, a well-stocked supermarket and lovely restaurants. We loved the rooftop terrace, with fantastic views over Venice.

Exactly as the pictures have it.
The rooftop balcony is amazing. We spent hours taking in the views and listening to the sounds of Venice coming in from all directions.
The apartment has plenty of space. We travelled as a family of four, but could cater for six easily.
Nice quiet location with access to restaurants, bars and supermarket all a short walk away.
The host was excellent with communication and instructions. Also provided great local information.
