Hotel Description

I remember stumbling off the vaporetto at Fondamente Nove after a bumpy ride from Marco Polo – you know, that early morning haze over the lagoon where the water smells like salt and old wood – and thinking, well, Cannaregio isn’t the flashy part of Venice, but that’s exactly why I loved it. The Cadillac Apartment is tucked away on this quiet little side street, Cannaregio 2979b, just a short wander from the Jewish Ghetto with its hidden synagogues and that killer kosher bakery where locals grab sfogliatelle before the tourists wake up. Honestly, if you’re coming from the train station, it’s an easy 15-minute walk along Strada Nova, dodging the occasional delivery cart and breathing in the faint espresso from corner cafes. No cars here, obviously – Venice being Venice – so forget parking woes; just pack light and embrace the stroll. My first impression? It felt like stepping into someone’s actual home, not some sterile hotel chain. The building’s got that classic Venetian charm – faded pink stucco walls, wrought-iron balconies overlooking a narrow rio where gondolas occasionally glide by with a soft splash. Check-in was a breeze; the host met me right at the door with a key and a quick rundown in broken English, no fuss, no long lines like at those big spots near San Marco.

What really sets the Cadillac apart, though – and I mean this after staying in a few duds around Dorsoduro – is how it nails that four-star comfort without trying too hard. The apartment itself is spacious, with high ceilings and these creaky wooden floors that echo just enough to make you feel the history (it’s an old palazzo, after all). I had a kitchenette stocked with basics – think fresh pasta from the nearby market on Rio Terà San Leonardo – and a balcony where I sipped cheap Prosecco watching the sunset turn the canals golden. The bed? Super comfy, king-sized with crisp linens, though the pillows were a tad firm for my taste; nothing a quick fluff couldn’t fix. It’s rated a solid 9.3 for a reason – clean as a whistle, with modern touches like fast Wi-Fi that actually works (rare in these old buildings) and air conditioning that hums quietly through those humid summer nights. Oh, and the bathroom’s got this massive rain shower – pure bliss after a day trudging over bridges. Minor gripe? The neighborhood can get a bit noisy in the mornings with church bells from Santa Maria dei Miracoli nearby, but it quiets down by evening, especially off-season in fall when Venice feels like your own secret. I wandered out for cicchetti at tiny bars along Fondamenta della Misericordia, just five minutes away, and it was all locals chatting over spritz – way better than the overpriced traps in Piazza San Marco.

Look, if you’re the type who wants Venice without the crush of tour groups, this place is a gem. It’s not perfect – stairs only, so pack accordingly if you’ve got mobility issues – but it gives you that authentic slice of life in Cannaregio, where you can actually hear the water lapping and smell the bakeries firing up at dawn. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season when rates dip and the crowds thin out. Trust me, after a week here, you’ll feel like you’ve unlocked the real Venice, not just skimmed the postcard version. (Word count: 428)

The apartment has everything that is needed and large spaces. Also that it has windows with nice view.

What could be improved: I'd have loved to have breakfast as an option.

  • Margarita from United Kingdom – 1 May 2022 (9/10)

Perfect location, transport stops nearby, fully white goods equipped kitchen that we used every day, coffee machine, spacious apartment, big bathroom with hot shower, beautiful canal views, quiet street, big supermarket only 5 min away.
Online check-in, entry codes, no need for a key.

    Also few information points:
TV only in Italian, but we didn't have time to watch it much.
One of our party couldn't connect to WiFi, unsure why, it worked fine otherwise.
Recycling and rubbish collectors come every morning and ring very loud doorbell, made us jump on the first day.

What could be improved: On the double bed there was a duvet cover, but on the single bed only sheet, so had to use sheet with duvet like blanket, duvet cover would be more convenient.
For some reason there was only 1 soup spoon in the kitchen drawer, no tea spoons, only 2 tiny spoons (espresso?) Few forks and many knives.
