Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Casa Alla Fenice almost by accident last spring, when I was wandering through Venice’s San Marco district trying to dodge the midday crowds around Piazza San Marco. It’s tucked away on this narrow little street called Rio Terà Degli Assassini – yeah, the name sounds a bit ominous, like something out of a spy novel, but honestly, it’s just a quiet, cobblestoned alley that feels worlds away from the tourist crush. I mean, you’re steps from the Grand Canal, but without all the selfie sticks and overpriced gelato stands breathing down your neck. I arrived by vaporetto from the train station – dropped off at San Marco Vallaresso, then a quick 5-minute stroll past those hidden courtyards where locals hang laundry and chat in Venetian dialect. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this friendly guy named Marco (of course), greeted me with a espresso and a map scribbled with his favorite spots – no stiff hotel lobby vibe here, just a cozy reception that smells faintly of fresh linen and that salty lagoon air drifting in from nearby canals.

What really won me over, though, was how the place captures that authentic Venetian charm without trying too hard. It’s a 3-star spot, so don’t expect marble spas or infinity pools – rooms are on the smaller side, with these old wooden beams overhead and creaky floors that add to the character (though, fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs for the occasional church bell or early-morning boat horn). Mine overlooked a tiny canal, and I’d wake up to the soft lapping of water and the chatter of gondoliers starting their day – sort of magical, you know? Breakfast is simple but solid: croissants, yogurt, and cappuccino served in a sunny courtyard that’s blissfully quiet before 9 AM, especially off-season when Venice isn’t swarming with day-trippers. And location-wise, it’s gold – you’re literally a stone’s throw from Teatro La Fenice (hence the name), so if you’re into opera or just want to catch a show without a long trek, it’s perfect. I wandered over to Campo Santo Stefano for aperitivo one evening, grabbed a spritz at this unassuming bar where locals outnumber tourists, and even popped into the nearby Peggy Guggenheim Collection on a whim. Oh, and practical note: no elevator, so if you’ve got heavy bags, ask for help – stairs are steep, but that’s Venice for you.

All in all, if you’re after a genuine slice of the city rather than some glossy chain hotel, Casa Alla Fenice is a gem. It’s got that 8.7 rating for a reason – clean, welcoming, and positioned just right for exploring without the exhaustion of constant crowds. Sure, it might not be for everyone (couples seeking ultra-romance could find the rooms a tad snug), but for solo travelers or history buffs like me, it’s spot-on. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a bit of Venice, not just passed through – and isn’t that the point? Next time I’m in town during Carnevale, when the streets buzz but this alley stays serene, I’ll be booking again.

I liked that it was very clean and close to everything. It wasn’t noisy and you never ran into anyone. Also very safe.

What could be improved: I guess not having a reception there.

  • Easy check-in – Grace from New Zealand – 7 April 2025 (9/10)

Good location, 5-10min walk to main areas and boat stops. The room was small but did the job and was clean. Was great to have a kettle and the room was beautifully decorated. Bathroom was small, shower was very small and pressure was okay, it had good consistent hot water.
Keyless and contactless check-in was easy. Storage of bags after checkout was possible at their nearby hotel, a 1-2min walk.

Great day. Perfect location. Great value.
