It’s tucked away on Fondamenta San Severo in the Castello district, this quiet little stretch along a narrow canal that’s more residential than touristy. I mean, you’re steps from Via Garibaldi, where locals grab their morning espresso and fresh produce from those floating market boats – none of that overpriced gelato trap stuff. The building itself has that classic Venetian vibe, with weathered brick and tall windows that let in the salty lagoon air, but it’s got a modern edge inside that doesn’t feel forced. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – a mix of friendly Italians who actually live nearby – handed me a map scribbled with their favorite osterias, like that hidden spot on Calle del Dose for cicchetti that tourists rarely find. Oh, and fair warning: no elevators here, so pack light if you’re on an upper floor – those stairs are steep, but hey, it’s Venice, what did you expect?

What really sets this place apart, though, is how it feels like a genuine slice of the city without the chaos. It’s not perfect – the neighborhood can get a tad noisy in the evenings with kids playing soccer on the campo nearby, and if you’re here in high season, book ahead because it fills up fast with repeat visitors who know the drill. But that’s part of the charm; it’s authentic, you know? You’re not isolated, but you’re not in the thick of the selfie-stick hordes either – a quick 15-minute walk to St. Mark’s Square, or hop on the number 1 vaporetto for the scenic route along the Grand Canal.

All in all, if you’re after a four-star stay that feels more like a local’s pied-à-terre than a generic hotel, Casa San Severo is it. I’ve been back twice now, and each time it reminds me why I fell for Venice in the first place – that mix of history, serenity, and just enough grit to keep it real. Sure, it’s pricier in peak months like July, but off-season? A steal, with quieter streets and that golden autumn light filtering through the shutters.   Fantastic location in a quiet area on a canal, 10 minutes walk from the ferry and 10 minutes (plus getting lost time) from St Marks square. Restaurants within a few metres
