Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Casa Virginia almost by accident while wandering through Cannaregio last spring – I was trying to escape the tourist crush around the Rialto, and honestly, this neighborhood feels like the real Venice, away from all the souvenir shops and overpriced gondola rides. It’s tucked right on a quiet stretch of the Cannaregio Canal, just a short walk from the Guglie Bridge, where you can hop on a vaporetto to zip over to the train station or even Murano if you’re into glass-blowing demos. I arrived by water taxi from the airport – pricey, but way better than lugging bags over bridges – and the check-in was this charmingly low-key affair: the owner met me at the door with a key and a quick rundown in broken English, no fuss, no long lines like at those big hotels in San Marco. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian palazzos, all weathered stone and arched windows, with the canal literally lapping at the steps – you can hear the gentle slosh of water against the walls at night, which is sort of mesmerizing, though I will say, during high tide in autumn, it might get a tad splashy if you’re not careful.

What really sold me on the place – and I mean, elevated it from “nice spot” to “I’d book it again in a heartbeat” – was that private roof terrace. It’s not some tiny afterthought; it’s a proper sprawl up top with lounge chairs, a little table for your morning espresso (or evening spritz, if that’s your vibe), and views straight out over the canal and rooftops toward the lagoon. I spent hours up there just watching the boats glide by, the sun setting with that golden glow Venice does so well – and get this, it’s shielded enough that you don’t get blasted by wind, even in March when things can be chilly. The rooms? Cozy and authentic, with exposed beams and those creaky wooden floors that make you feel like you’re in a lived-in home rather than a sterile hotel chain. Mine had a canal-view balcony – woke up to the smell of fresh bread from the bakery on Fondamenta della Sensa nearby – but fair warning, no elevator, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing. The whole setup is spotless, with a small kitchenette that’s handy for grabbing groceries from the market at Campo Santa Maria Nova (pro tip: hit it early to avoid the locals snapping up the best produce). Noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet compared to the bustling areas – maybe a distant church bell or some chatter from passing vaporettos, but nothing that kept me up.

All in all, if you’re the type who wants Venice without the overwhelm – say, couples looking for romance or solo travelers craving some peace – Casa Virginia nails it. That 9.6 rating isn’t hype; it’s earned from spots like this where you actually feel connected to the city, not just passing through. Well, except maybe during Carnevale when even Cannaregio gets a bit lively – book ahead for that. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a secret, and isn’t that what travel’s all about?

Reviews

  • A beautiful home in Venice – Joanna from Qatar – 16 June 2025 (10/10)

Beautiful large apartment, very clean, great location, apartment had everything you need for a family break. We loved both terraces… one with a hot tub where we ate breakfast, and the other on the roof where we sunbathed and had evening cocktails. Alessia who met us at check in gave us a thorough run through of the property, provided some basic breakfast items (milk, juice, yoghurt, jams and pastries), gave us recommendations for nearby cafes, restaurants and a supermarket etc. She was wonderful and easy to contact. It's easy to reach the apartment from the airport using the Alilaguna orange line and disembarking opposite the apartment at the Guglia stop. We would happily return!

What could be improved: Everything was great

  • Exceptional – Richard from United Kingdom – 15 June 2025 (10/10)

Close to the station and restaurants. Wonderful accomodation and Alessia who greeted us was very knowledgeable about the restaurants and places to visit

  • Convenient, comfortable and impressive apartment in the best area to,stay in our opinion, Cannaregio. – Tracey from Australia – 7 June 2025 (9/10)

Beautiful apartment in the convenient Cannaregio area of Venice close enough to walk from Santa Lucia Train Station but away from the hustle and bustle of the Saint Marco area. Our group – 2 couples, enjoyed this well layed out and comfortable apartment where we were also able to take the Vaperetti /ferry a short walk from the apartment to many locations when we were tired of walking. The host’s representative met on arrival and was very friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend this apartment.

What could be improved: The 2nd bathroom is very small – not for large people and the toilet seat was broken at the time by the previous guests, which the hosts were in the process of fixing and were apologetic about.

  • Wonderful – Linda from United States – 2 May 2025 (10/10)

    It was just perfect.

What could be improved: Curtains hanging in the stairways. Tripped over one of them.

  • Ale is a great host, we loved our stay! Recommended 100% – Filip from Belgium – 12 November 2024 (10/10)

Beautiful apartment, very clean, great rooftop terrace and on top of that even a hot tub to unwind, a super place!

What could be improved: Some fresh options for breakfast would have made it perfect, but we enjoyed nevertheless all the food and drink items that were at our disposal.

  • Exceptional – Justin from United States – 15 October 2024 (10/10)

The host was the best, she helped us in so many ways. I can’t say enough.

  • Clean and comfortable. Loaded with character and charm. – Madafferi from Australia – 6 September 2024 (9/10)

Great location and close walk from the train station. On more of the outskirts but we liked being away from the hustle and tourists. Host was fabulous and organised a water taxi for us and offered to keep our luggage after check out. Rooms were all clean and comfortable. Spa was clean and new. Highly recommend. Loved the styling and beams and character of the place.

  • Thank you for a nice experience! – Tuyen from Canada – 29 August 2024 (9/10)

Very nice apartment as a home away from home. We were welcomed in a very warm and kind way that we couldn’t ask for more. A convenient location to either train station or restaurants, water bus. References given by the owner were topnotch. Thank you!

What could be improved: The staircase to the apartment is quite a challenge for heavy luggages but manageable for us though.

    What could be improved: Nothing
