The address is Fondamenta del Remedio, right along this quiet canal in Castello 4405/A, and let me tell you, finding it the first time was a bit of a treasure hunt; no cars in Venice, obviously, so you’re lugging your bags over bridges and dodging pigeons, but once you spot the unassuming door tucked between old stone buildings, it’s like stepping into a hidden gem. Check-in was a breeze – the host met me right there with a warm smile and a quick espresso (which, after a flight, was a godsend), and they even gave me a little map scribbled with insider tips, like where to grab the best cicchetti at nearby Campo Santa Maria Formosa without the crowds.

What really hooked me, though, was how this place nails that romantic, lived-in vibe without trying too hard – it’s a 4-star setup, but feels more like staying in a friend’s elegantly restored apartment than some sterile hotel. My room overlooked the canal, with these tall shuttered windows that let in the soft lapping sounds of water taxis at dusk and the faint smell of salt air mixed with whatever’s baking from the forno down the street (fresh focaccia in the mornings, I swear it wafts right up). The decor’s all soft linens, antique mirrors, and these plush velvet armchairs that are perfect for curling up with a glass of prosecco after a day of wandering – oh, and the bed? King-sized and ridiculously comfortable, though fair warning, the floors creak a little in that charming old-building way, which might wake light sleepers if someone’s pacing at night. It’s super central, just a five-minute stroll to the Libreria Acqua Alta (that quirky bookstore with books in bathtubs – go early to avoid the lines) or over to the Arsenale for those quieter biennale vibes in summer. Noise-wise, it’s peaceful here compared to the San Marco chaos; evenings are all about distant church bells and maybe a gondolier’s song echoing off the water, but come high season in July, you might hear more foot traffic outside.

All in all, with that 9.6 rating, it’s no surprise this spot’s a standout – I mean, if you’re after authentic Venice without the gimmicks, this is it. Sure, the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the back rooms (blame the thick walls), and there’s no on-site restaurant, but that’s what makes it feel genuine; you’re encouraged to venture out to places like Corte Sconte for squid ink pasta. I’d book it again in a heartbeat for a romantic getaway – well, or even solo, just to soak in that timeless magic. If you’re visiting off-peak in winter, it’s even better, quieter and cozier, like the city’s whispering its secrets just to you.

  Fantastic location close to all the attractions. We stayed for Christmas and appreciated how well equipped the kitchen was, we were able to cook a beautiful meal from produce we bought at the markets. From the bedrooms you can look out to the local canal. Separate room and beds for the kids. All comfortable. As many have noted, our host Beatrice was wonderful – welcoming us to the apartment, providing invaluable advice and accessible throughout. We loved that the foyer was decorated for Christmas. Generous supplies (eg toilet paper). Private entrance foyer and not many steps to the first floor.

  Beatrice was an amazing hostess! Easy to reach, she met us at the water taxi and helped haul our luggage! Very helpful with showing us the best places for sightseeing and had a map of the city in the apartment! She also had an extensive guidebook with suggestions for places to eat, shop, and top transportation picks.
