Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro stop – you know, that gorgeous Gothic palace right on the Grand Canal – and weaving my way through the narrow calles of Cannaregio to find my spot at City Apartments Cannaregio. It’s not one single building, actually; they’ve got these apartments scattered around the district, which means you might end up in a cozy spot off Fondamenta della Sensa or closer to the Strada Nova bustle. Mine was in a quiet corner near the Jewish Ghetto – the oldest in the world, if you’re into that history vibe – and honestly, it felt like I’d unlocked a secret side of Venice. No massive hotel lobby here; check-in was a breeze with a local rep meeting me at the door, handing over keys and a quick rundown on where to grab the best cicchetti (those little Venetian tapas) at nearby spots like Al Timon. The place itself? A solid four-star setup in an old palazzo – think exposed wooden beams, terracotta floors that creak just a bit underfoot, and that faint, salty canal smell drifting in when you crack the window. It’s not luxurious in a flashy way, but it’s authentic, you know? I mean, the kitchenette was stocked enough for me to whip up pasta from the market at Rialto, which is just a 15-minute stroll away – beats eating out every night when you’re trying to save a few euros.
What really won me over, though, was how it plunged me right into the rhythm of Cannaregio life. This district’s less touristy than San Marco – well, except during Carnevale when masks flood the streets – so mornings were peaceful, with the sound of church bells from Madonna dell’Orto mixing with the lap of water against the fondamenta. My apartment had a small balcony overlooking a side canal, perfect for sipping espresso and watching nonnas hang laundry – a far cry from the crowded bridges elsewhere. Inside, the beds were comfy, with those thick duvets that make you want to sleep in, and the Wi-Fi held up for streaming (though it dipped during peak evening hours, sort of like everywhere in Venice). Practical stuff: no parking, obviously – this is car-free Venice – but you’re steps from vaporetto lines, and I loved the short walk to the train station for day trips to Murano. One minor gripe? The stairs – no elevator in these historic buildings, so pack light if you’re not up for lugging suitcases. And watch for high tide in autumn; my street got a bit splashy once, but that’s part of the charm, right? The neighborhood’s got everything: a bakery on Rio Terà San Leonardo for fresh focaccia, and hidden gems like the Campo dei Mori with its quirky statues.
All in all, if you’re after a Venice stay that feels lived-in rather than staged, City Apartments Cannaregio is a gem – rated an 8 for good reason, I’d say. It’s ideal for couples or small families who want space to spread out (mine slept four easily) without the anonymity of a big chain. Sure, it’s not perfect – noise from late-night revelers on weekends can seep in – but it captures that elusive Venetian essence, where every corner tells a story. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the fog rolls in and the crowds thin out. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve actually experienced the city, not just ticked it off a list.

Authentic and great location – Carnty from United Kingdom – 27 August 2023 (8/10)
Location. Spacious. Comfortable
What could be improved: Canal noisy all night. Workmen early in the morning drilling and hammering below. Flakey paint work. Basic showerVery good – Anna from Germany – 24 May 2024 (8/10)
What could be improved: the shower was cold 😉
Good – Miguel from Portugal – 31 July 2023 (7/10)
Location, cleanliness, architecture, decoration
What could be improved: Wi-fi speed was slow, AC was loud not very efficient, the double bed had two individual mattresses instead of one double mattressGreat view of canals, walking distance to many tourism areas and short walk to water bus. Spacious family apartment. – Jo from Australia – 20 July 2023 (7/10)
Spacious bedrooms. All necessary facilities ie washing machine, fridge, cooking etc. Air-conditioning was fantastic given how hot Venice was.
What could be improved: No hot water. We told apartment but wasn’t fixed. Given how hot it was it wasn’t a disaster.Exceptional – Arcel from United States – 20 June 2025 (10/10)
Best location while in Venice
It was ok but be prepared not to sleep so well. – Sally from United Kingdom – 16 November 2024 (5/10)
It was in a central location and it was really clean and tidy. Had good facilities and check in was easy.
What could be improved: There is A LOT of noise from the canals at night. Also, it was a bit chilly – could have done with additional blankets. The shower head was broken – it isn’t attached to the wall. Could have done with a sofa in the same room as the tv.Exceptional – Robinson from United States – 28 July 2024 (10/10)
Location
What could be improved: AC too high, needed to be coolerPleasant – Shah from India – 21 May 2024 (6/10)
What could be improved: My apartment was on fourth floor and no lift or elevator was there,so it was very hard to drag the bags to top floor
Lovely Apartment just needs a little attention – Caroline from United Kingdom – 8 May 2023 (6/10)
Modern, clean property. Great view from bedroom. Lovely to have balcony. Quiet area. close to supermarket.
What could be improved: No Kettle! Questioned couple of times to staff, face to face and by message and the reply was “use a pan to boil water” Not impressed, I’m not camping and for the price I’ve paid, I expect full service.
Unfortunately apartment was smelling of dampness/sewage, I think might have drainage problem. It wasn’t summer season to blame the canals. Outside of the apartment didn’t smell.
