Hotel Description
You know, wandering into Venice’s Castello district always feels like slipping into the city’s real heartbeat – away from the throngs at San Marco, but close enough that you’re not missing out. I stumbled upon Corte Rubbi 5 Deluxe Studio-Apartment last spring, right after dodging the crowds around the Rialto Bridge, and honestly, it was a breath of fresh air. Tucked away on a narrow calle off Campo Santa Maria Formosa – that’s the square with that quirky church and the little bakery where locals grab their morning cornetti – this place is in one of those classic Venetian buildings, all weathered stone and wrought-iron balconies. No cars here, obviously, so I lugged my bag from the vaporetto stop at San Zaccaria (about a 10-minute walk, mind you, with a couple of bridges to cross – pack light if you’re not into stairs). Check-in was a breeze; the host met me at the door with a key and a quick rundown in broken English, pointing out the hidden courtyard where you can hear the distant hum of gondolas on the canal. It’s not flashy – three stars, after all – but that 9.5 rating? Totally earned. The studio’s got this cozy, lived-in vibe, like staying in a friend’s apartment rather than some sterile hotel room.
What really got me was how well they’ve kitted out the space without overdoing it. The deluxe studio is compact – we’re talking Venice real estate, so expect tight quarters – but it’s got everything: a full kitchenette with a Nespresso machine (saved me a fortune on breakfasts, honestly), a comfy queen bed that actually feels luxurious after a day of pounding pavements, and a bathroom with one of those rain showers that make you forget the occasional whiff of canal water outside. I mean, the exposed beams and terracotta floors add that authentic charm, though the Wi-Fi can be spotty during peak hours – blame the thick walls, I suppose. Mornings were my favorite; I’d brew coffee and listen to the church bells from nearby San Giovanni e Paolo, or step out to grab fresh produce from the market on Via Garibaldi, just a short stroll away. It’s quiet at night, too – no rowdy tourists spilling out of bars like in Dorsoduro – but if you’re here in high summer, well, the humidity creeps in everywhere. Still, for a self-catering spot, it’s spot-on; I whipped up pasta with ingredients from that little shop on Calle del Paradiso, feeling like a local for a change.
Look, if you’re the type who wants Venice without the hassle – maybe a couple escaping for a romantic weekend or a solo traveler tired of overpriced hostels – this is your spot. It’s not perfect; the lack of an elevator means hauling luggage up a flight or two, and during acqua alta season, you might need wellies for the short walk to the square. But that’s Venice for you, right? The value’s insane for the location – steps from hidden gems like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore – and it left me with that warm, “I could live here” feeling. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the city’s magic really shines through without the crowds.

Exceptional – R from Canada – 16 November 2023 (10/10)
Great location, easy, quick walk to points of interest. We arrived from the airport by water taxi. Our host, Elisa was wonderful in providing information on how best to get to the place. She was waiting for us at the suggested dock that was a quick walk to the apartment. The building and the suite are lovely, clean, safe and charming. Our kids loved their bunk beds and the privacy that the set up afforded. We loved being on a canal, seeing an occasional gondola float by. The mornings are busy on the canal, lots of action and noise, but the windows are great at minimizing it. At night, it is very quiet and peaceful.
