Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at the Ca’ Rezzonico stop in Dorsoduro – you know, that quieter part of Venice where the canals feel a bit more lived-in, away from the San Marco crowds – and weaving my way through those narrow calli to find Corte San Marco. It’s tucked right into this little courtyard off Fondamenta del Gaffaro, honestly one of those spots that feels like a secret even locals might overlook. The building itself is this charming old palazzo, all faded terracotta walls and wrought-iron balconies dripping with ivy – I mean, it sort of whispers “Venice” without screaming it. Arriving in the late afternoon during shoulder season (think early October, when the summer hordes have thinned out), the place was blissfully quiet; no tour groups clogging the alleys, just the distant lap of water against stone and that faint, briny canal smell mixing with espresso from a nearby bar. Check-in was a breeze – the staff, this warm Italian couple who actually live on-site, handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best hidden osteria around the corner on Campo Santa Margherita. No fuss, no long lines, though fair warning, if you’re lugging heavy bags, those cobbled paths can be a workout since cars are a no-go in Venice.
What really won me over, though, was how the hotel nails that balance between old-world charm and the stuff you actually need on a trip. My room overlooked the corte – this tiny, sun-dappled square with a well in the middle, like something out of a postcard – and it had these high ceilings with exposed beams that made it feel spacious, even if the space itself was on the cozy side (you know, Venetian proportions). The bed was plush, with crisp linens that smelled faintly of lavender, and the bathroom had one of those rain showers that just melts away the travel grime. Breakfast was served in a little garden out back – fresh cornetti, cappuccino strong enough to wake the dead, and these homemade jams from the owners’ family recipe. It’s not over-the-top luxurious, but that’s the appeal; it’s authentic, like staying at a friend’s place who knows the city inside out. They even lent me a map with hand-drawn notes on spots like the Squero di San Trovaso gondola yard, just a five-minute stroll away, where you can watch craftsmen at work – way better than the tourist traps. Noise-wise, it’s peaceful at night, though you might hear the occasional church bell or boat horn if your window’s open. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms – but hey, you’re in Venice, put the phone down and wander.
All in all, if you’re after a slice of real Venetian life without the gimmicks, Corte San Marco is a gem. It’s in Dorsoduro, so you’re steps from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and that iconic Accademia Bridge, but far enough from the Piazza San Marco chaos that you can actually breathe. I stayed three nights last fall and left feeling like I’d uncovered a hidden corner of the city – well, sort of, since it’s got that solid 8.2 rating for a reason. Go in the off-season if you can; prices dip, and the magic amps up. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself when you’re sipping spritz on a quiet campo, far from the selfie sticks.

Superb – Tadas from Lithuania – 3 November 2024 (9/10)
All nice and
What could be improved: The washing machine and the dishwasher were both broken, I fixed it myself before usage.
The carpets were not very clean (because the vacuum cleaner is weak) and dishes could have been better washed.A very pleasant and special stay in Venice – Sarah from Austria – 17 September 2024 (9/10)
Very nice apartment, the interior is elaborate and shows love for detail.
Beautiful area in Venice, calm, not too many tourists and nice restaurants nearby. We also received a booklet for things to do in Venice from the owner and the recommendations were all special.
The owner seems to have taken the last reviews into consideration, our check-in was flexible, since our flight arrived very early in the morning, we could put our luggage inside and come back in the afternoon. All the amenities were explained in detail.
There are also two sets of keys now.Tastefully decorated, spacious house in a quiet and lovely neighbourhood of Venice. Highly recommend – Tamara from Spain – 24 May 2024 (9/10)
The house is very lovely and nicely decorated. The location is excellent. It's about 20-30 minute walk to St. Mark's but in an very quiet and beautiful area away from the crowds. I would definitely recommend staying there and would stay there again on a return to Venice.
What could be improved: Everything was perfect except there was a bit of back and forth about the check-in. Originally the woman who cleans it (not the owner) wanted us to check in at 6pm which was unreasonable. After messaging the property we were able to resolve this issue and the apartment was ready at 2pm. You have to fix an exact time to check-in in advance.Exceptional – Paolo from Greece – 23 May 2025 (10/10)
Nice property, nice location… Fully furnished and with lots of space.
What could be improved: –Disappointing – Tibor from Hungary – 25 August 2024 (6/10)
Nicely designed furniture, spacious kitchen, fairly close to the main parking places.
What could be improved: We had to wait 20 minutes in the 30+ heat outside the apartment in the courtyard for a lady to let us in. She did not speak English… luckily one of us knew some Italian. The lady quickly arranged the apartment, but when she said she was ready, we saw that there was still a lot of dirt everywhere and the floors were obviously not cleaned. When we asked her to do the cleaning, she reluctantly took a vacuum cleaner and did the floors for about 5 minutes, but even after this the floor remained quite dirty.
We were 5 people, but only got one key. (I think you cannot assume that 5 people will always stick together – at least 2-3 sets of keys should really be available. But when we asked for one more set, we were told there was no more).
The apartment is perfect for two people (there is a nice bedroom). Anyone else must sleep on couches and there was a spare bed for one of us. These were not made when we arrived, the said lady – after our specific request – provided sheets and pillow cases – and left. Not sure how we would have found the sheets / pillow cases, had we not asked specifically.
By the way, the air conditioner on the ground floor was very hard to turn on – you need to be very patient, it took me about 5 minutes to find the right way to press the button. Also, the ground floor entrance door is very hard to open.
Overall, we felt really disappointed.Exceptional – Jeannette from Chile – 14 July 2025 (10/10)
