Honestly, arriving in Venice can be a hassle – no cars means everything’s on foot or by boat – but this spot’s positioning made it a breeze; I mean, it’s far enough from the train station to avoid the backpacker rush, but close enough that you can pop over to the Jewish Ghetto for a quiet wander or grab fresh pastries from that tiny bakery on Rio Terà San Leonardo in the mornings. The building itself has this charming, slightly weathered facade that blends right into the neighborhood – think faded terracotta and wrought-iron balconies – and when I checked in, the staff were so laid-back, chatting about the best times to avoid the high water (acqua alta) in autumn, which is the kind of local tip that saves your shoes.

What really won me over, though, was how the place captures that pirate-themed vibe without going overboard – it’s called Covo del Pirata, after all, so there are these subtle nautical touches like old maps on the walls and rope accents in the lobby, but it’s not cheesy, you know? My room was on the upper floor, overlooking a quiet canal where you could hear the gentle lap of water against the walls at night, mixed with the occasional murmur from a passing gondola – so peaceful compared to the buzzing in other parts of town. The bed was plush, with those crisp linens that smell faintly of lavender (they must use some local detergent), and the bathroom had a rain shower that felt luxurious after a day of exploring. Breakfast is served in this cozy courtyard – well, more like a sun-dappled patio – with fresh cornetti, cheeses, and espresso strong enough to wake the dead, and I appreciated how they source stuff from nearby markets; it’s not some generic buffet. Oh, and a minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but hey, you’re in Venice – put the phone down and enjoy the view. It’s a solid 4-star setup, but it feels more intimate, like staying at a friend’s stylish apartment rather than a big hotel chain.

Look, if you’re the type who wants to experience the real Venice – the one with fewer tourists and more authentic rhythms – this is your spot. I stayed during shoulder season in April, when the canals aren’t sweltering yet, and it was perfect for long walks to places like the Fondamente Nove for a ferry to Murano. The 9.3 rating isn’t hype; it’s earned through those thoughtful details, like the staff recommending hidden spots for sunset views or helping with luggage on check-out. Sure, it’s not the cheapest, but for the value – that blend of comfort, location, and charm – I’d book it again in a heartbeat. Just remember to pack light; those calles aren’t forgiving on wheels.

  Great location, not far from the station and easy to get around on foot. The place was lovely and clean, had everything you’d need for a short stay. Simone was great to communicate with. Made sure I got in to the room okay, and was easily reachable if I needed anything! Even let me stay a little after checkout which was an absolute treat to have a sleep in!

  Great location close to the train station (10 mins walk) and boat station Guglie (5 mins walk). A lot of great restaurants nearby.
  Very clean, well equipped, and quiet.
  Simple and clear instructions on checking in and out.
  
  What could be improved: A bit stuffy – one needs to always open windows to ventilate (could be cold in the night).
  Apartment is located at the ground floor, and windows look in the inner space. So there’s not enough natural light, but it’s a minor minus especially if one only stays a couple of days and don’t spend all the time in the apartment.

  Our stay at Covo del Pirata was fantastic! The location is perfect—right in the heart of everything, making it easy to explore the area. The host, Simone, was incredibly hospitable and went above and beyond to take care of our every need. The property was spotless, and it was clear that a lot of care is put into maintaining it. Simone was always quick to respond to any questions we had, which made our stay even more enjoyable. I highly recommend Covo del Pirata for anyone looking for a comfortable and convenient place to stay.

  We booked the smaller room but got a free upgrade to the apartment, which was great. The apartment was spacious and modern, with excellent facilities and amenities. The bedroom was comfy and quiet; there was a big wardrobe for clothes, a kitchen, a big table and a sofa with a big-screen smart TV.
  
  The host was super helpful as we encountered a few inconveniences (that weren't the host's fault), and he immediately provided a good solution.
  
  The location is amazing. It's in the heart of the Cannaregio district, close to the central station, and walkable everywhere. We'll be back!

  Beautifully appointed apartments, one for a family of 4 and another for a couple. We booked both together for our family and parents travelling together.
  Short walk from station. Kitchenette in the larger apartment. No microwave but electric jug and induction stovetop provide.
  Smart locks for check-in. Needs internet access or code provided. Worked well and convenient, but might be confusing for a first time user.
