I remember stumbling upon G House after weaving through the narrow alleys of San Marco – you know, that labyrinth of calles where you can get lost even with a map in hand. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at San Zaccaria, dodging the usual throng of day-trippers spilling out from Piazza San Marco, and honestly, finding Calle de le Carrozze felt like a little victory. It’s tucked away just off the main drag, close enough to hear the distant chime of the basilica’s bells in the morning, but far enough from the piazza’s chaos that you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in a postcard. Venice in summer can be a madhouse, with those crowds peaking around midday, but this spot? It’s got that quiet charm – think soft lapping of canal water against old stone walls and the faint, briny scent of the lagoon drifting in if you crack a window. I arrived a bit sweaty from hauling my bag over a couple of bridges (no elevators in these historic buildings, mind you, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing), and the check-in was a breeze – the staff, a mix of locals who know every shortcut in the sestiere, handed over my key with a quick tip on avoiding the tourist traps for dinner.

What really won me over, though, was how G House nails that blend of old-world Venetian elegance without feeling stuffy. The rooms are cozy – mine had these exposed wooden beams overhead and a view onto a tiny courtyard where pigeons coo in the afternoons (a bit noisy at dawn, but hey, that’s authentic Venice for you). It’s a 4-star spot, sure, but it doesn’t scream luxury; instead, it’s got thoughtful touches like fresh pastries at breakfast that actually taste homemade, not the bland stuff you get at bigger chains. I mean, well, the coffee’s strong enough to power you through a day of wandering to Rialto Bridge – just a 10-minute stroll away, crossing over the Ponte de la Guerra if you want to shortcut through the backstreets. And speaking of practicalities, there’s no parking drama here (obviously, it’s Venice), but they can arrange a water taxi pickup if you’re coming from Marco Polo Airport. The Wi-Fi’s reliable, which saved me when I needed to book last-minute tickets to the Doge’s Palace, and the beds? Super comfortable, with that crisp linen feel after a long day on your feet. Oh, and if you’re there in shoulder season, like early spring, it’s blissfully quiet – no echoing footsteps from late-night revelers, just the occasional gondola serenade floating by.

All in all, if you’re after a place that feels genuinely embedded in San Marco without the overwhelming buzz, G House is a solid pick – that 8.8 rating doesn’t lie. It’s not the cheapest (expect to pay a premium during Carnevale when everything’s booked solid), and yeah, the bathrooms are on the compact side, sort of like most spots in these converted palazzos. But for couples or solo travelers wanting to wake up steps from the action – think quick jaunts to hidden gems like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore or a quiet spritz at a bacaro nearby – it’s worth it. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a slice of Venetian life, not just visited. You know what? Book it for a few nights; you’ll thank me when you’re sipping coffee on that tiny balcony, watching the city wake up.

  Wow! G House is amazing and we loved our stay here whilst in Venice. You won’t find an apartment this size for the price in Venice! Book it. Over four floors and with a balcony! Super clean tidy and very well equiped. Lovely quiet location and close to everything. Perfect!

  The location was excellent. We were self catering but did hav dinner at the hotel and had drinks in the lounge. All excellent service. The concierge was extremely helpful. Our luggage was takem up into our rooms and were collected when we were leaving. The transport to and from Marco Polo was arranged and tgat was also excellent. I would highly recommend the Townhouse.

  Fantastic location right next to San Samuele taxi stop. Allowed independent living in the heart of Venice. Accommodation authentic and traditional. Close to all major sights.
