Hotel Description

I remember stepping off the train at Santa Lucia station – you know, that chaotic hub where everyone’s dragging suitcases over the bridges – and thinking, well, at least Hotel Amadeus is just a quick stroll down Lista di Spagna. It’s right there at number 227, smack in the heart of Cannaregio, which honestly feels like the real Venice before you hit the tourist crush around San Marco. I mean, it’s not one of those hidden gems tucked away in a quiet campo – this street buzzes with shops and eateries, especially in the evenings when locals pop into places like that little bacaro nearby for cicchetti and spritz. But that’s part of the charm; you’re immersed without feeling isolated. The hotel itself has this classic Venetian vibe, with a facade that’s all ornate windows and faded elegance – four stars, sure, but it earns its solid 8 rating by not trying too hard to be flashy. Check-in was a breeze, even though we arrived during that post-lunch lull when the lobby smells faintly of espresso and fresh pastries from the breakfast room (which, side note, closes a bit early if you’re a late riser).

Diving deeper, what really stuck with me were the rooms – ours overlooked a side canal, nothing grand like the Grand Canal views you pay an arm and a leg for elsewhere, but peaceful enough that you could hear the gentle lap of water against the walls at night, drowned out only occasionally by the hum of vaporettos in the distance. The decor’s a tad dated, with those heavy brocade curtains and marble bathrooms that echo a bit, but it’s spotless and comfortable – think firm beds that actually let you sleep after a day of wandering. Breakfast is included, and it’s decent: fresh croissants, some local cheeses, and coffee that’s strong enough to wake you up for an early ferry to Murano. Staff-wise, they’re friendly without being overbearing; one concierge even tipped us off to avoiding the crowds at the Jewish Ghetto by going mid-morning – that’s the kind of local insight you appreciate in a place like this. Oh, and if you’re worried about noise, Lista di Spagna can get lively with foot traffic, especially in high season (May to September, basically), but the double-glazed windows do a solid job of muting it. No parking hassles here, obviously – Venice being car-free means you’re walking or water-taxiing everywhere, and the hotel’s position makes it easy to hop on the number 1 vaporetto right from the nearby Ferrovia stop.

Honestly, if you’re looking for a no-fuss base in Venice that doesn’t break the bank but still feels authentic, Hotel Amadeus is a smart pick. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the upper floors, and the air conditioning hums a little too loudly for light sleepers – but for the price, you get that blend of convenience and character that makes repeat visits tempting. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the quieter shoulder seasons when Cannaregio shows its true colors, away from the summer hordes. You know what? Pair it with a sunset walk along the Strada Nova, and you’ve got yourself a proper Venetian escape.

The room was adequate for our needs.

What could be improved: Considering it’s a 4-star hotel, we expected a bit more in terms of quality and amenities (stay and breakfast).
The facilities were very old and showed significant signs of wear and degradation, which was disappointing.

Location easy to get to from train or bus station. Room & bathroom good size. Breakfast had plenty of variety, also the outside garden area behind the breakfast room looked pleasant.

What could be improved: Lack of power sockets for phone charging, but understandable as it is an old building like most Venetian hotels.

The hotel is in a good location, right next to the station, this is important especially when you arrive in Venice with heavy luggage. The property has everything you’d need for a pleasant stay. The breakfast was really good.

What could be improved: The guys at the reception could be more welcoming and customer oriented.
