I remember stepping off the vaporetto at Ca’ d’Oro – you know, that stop right on the Grand Canal with the fancy palazzo that looks like it’s made of lace – and weaving my way through those narrow calli in Cannaregio to find Hotel Apostoli Garden. It’s tucked away on Sestiere Cannaregio 4531, sort of hidden behind a little bridge over one of those quiet side canals, which honestly makes it feel like a local secret rather than some flashy spot in San Marco. Venice can be overwhelming with all the crowds around Rialto, but this area? It’s got that lived-in vibe – think old-school bacari bars where you can grab a spritz for cheap, and it’s just a 10-minute stroll to the Jewish Ghetto with its synagogues and kosher spots that most tourists skip. I arrived in the late afternoon during shoulder season (early October, when the summer hordes thin out but the weather’s still mild), and check-in was a breeze – no long lines, just a friendly guy at the desk who handed over my key with a quick chat about avoiding the high water if it rains. The building itself is one of those classic Venetian townhouses, all faded pink plaster and wrought-iron balconies, and stepping inside, there’s this faint, comforting smell of polished wood and fresh linen that cuts through the canal dampness outside.

What really won me over, though – and I mean, this is a 3-star place, so don’t expect marble spas or anything – was the garden. Yeah, it’s called Apostoli Garden for a reason; they’ve got this little courtyard out back with potted lemon trees and climbing vines that actually bloom in spring, making it a perfect spot to sip your morning espresso without the buzz of vaporettos honking by. My room was on the second floor, overlooking a quiet alley – cozy, with those high ceilings and creaky wooden floors that remind you you’re in a building that’s probably seen centuries. The bed was firm but comfy, and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that felt like a treat after pounding the pavements all day. Well, minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty if you’re in a back room, especially during peak hours when everyone’s streaming, but hey, you’re in Venice – put the phone down and wander. The staff were great, too; one morning, the housekeeper tipped me off about a nearby market on Strada Nova where locals buy fresh produce, saving me from overpriced tourist traps. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful at night – just the occasional church bell from Santi Apostoli nearby, which adds to the charm without keeping you up.

Honestly, if you’re looking for that authentic Venice experience without breaking the bank, this place is a gem. Rated around 8.4 for good reason – it’s not perfect (breakfast is basic continental stuff, croissants and coffee, nothing gourmet), but it nails the essentials with a personal touch that bigger hotels miss. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the quieter months like November when the fog rolls in and the city feels magical. Just pack light – those bridges and stairs aren’t forgiving – and you’ll thank me later.

  What could be improved: When we checked in our room wasn’t ready. We were just going to leave our bags but they said they had a room that was ready & they would upgrade us to that one. Our original one was on the 1st floor with King bed but the 1 we got was a Queen bed on 2nd floor. The shower leaked on the floor & the bathroom was tiny. Paid for King bed & got Queen & didn’t even have a balcony or anything.

  Appreciated the location, the garden view room (with the jasmine in full bloom!), the pleasant staff, and the delightful garden. There are many excellent restaurants nearby. Really appreciated the video directions provided from Campo Santi Apostoli.

  I liked the location, the receptionist was very kind and helpful, I liked the cleaning mostly. Room was useful for a solo traveller. I had a big terrace and I really liked it!
  
  What could be improved: Instead of putting a duvet cover on the duvet, a sheet was placed to cover only the inside of the duvet. There is a sheet that is folded up a little from the edge and brought to the top on the underside of the duvet. This was done so that it would not touch us, but considering that the duvet is not something that is constantly washed and that sheet slides and the top is mostly empty, I think it is not hygienic. My comment is a constructive comment, I wanted to contribute so that it can be changed.

  Loved the location. The staff were wonderful and informative. The communication from the hotel prior to the stay and how to find the hotel was excellent.
  The only uncomfortable thing to mention would be the mattress could be replaced.
