Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Hotel Casa Verardo Residenza d’Epoca almost by accident during my last trip to Venice – you know, one of those serendipitous finds when you’re wandering the Castello district, trying to dodge the throngs around San Marco. It’s tucked away on Campo Ss. Filippo e Giacomo, this quiet little square that’s just a stone’s throw from the bustling Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront, but honestly, it feels worlds apart from the tourist chaos. I arrived via vaporetto from the train station, lugging my bag over that rickety bridge near the Arsenale – no cars in Venice, right? So parking’s a non-issue, but if you’re hauling heavy luggage, well, brace yourself for the cobbles. The building itself is this charming 16th-century palazzo, all faded frescoes and wrought-iron balconies, and stepping inside was like walking into someone’s elegant old home. The check-in was a breeze – the staff, these warm locals who speak flawless English (and a bit of French, I think), handed me a key with a smile and pointed out the creaky wooden stairs up to my room. No elevator, mind you, which might be a drag if you’ve got mobility issues, but it adds to that authentic Venetian vibe.

What really won me over was how the place balances history with just enough modern comfort – it’s a residenza d’epoca, after all, so expect exposed beams and antique furniture that smells faintly of polished wood and fresh linens. My room overlooked the campo, with these tall shuttered windows that let in the morning light and the distant hum of church bells from San Zaccaria nearby. It wasn’t huge, but cozy, with a comfy bed that didn’t creak too much (unlike some spots I’ve stayed in) and a bathroom that, surprisingly, had decent water pressure – a rarity in these old buildings. Breakfast was served in this sunny courtyard garden, you know what, with birds chirping and the scent of espresso wafting around; they do fresh pastries, prosciutto, and those little yogurts, nothing over-the-top but perfect for fueling a day of exploring. I mean, it’s only 3 stars, so don’t expect a spa or gym, but there’s free Wi-Fi that actually works, and the air conditioning hummed quietly during that sticky July heat. Oh, and noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful at night – the square quiets down after dinner, though you might hear the occasional gondolier singing if the wind’s right. One minor gripe: the rooms could use a few more outlets for charging gadgets, but that’s Venice for you, sort of frozen in time.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels genuinely Venetian without the pretentious price tag – it’s got a stellar 9.1 rating for a reason – this is it. You’re steps from hidden gems like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore or that tiny bacaro on Calle della Mandola for cicchetti and spritz, and St. Mark’s is maybe a 5-minute walk, but far enough to escape the pigeon-feeding crowds. I stayed there in shoulder season, early May, when the canals aren’t too smelly yet, and it was blissfully uncrowded. Honestly, for couples or solo travelers who want that intimate, lived-in charm over flashy luxury, Casa Verardo’s a keeper – just pack light and embrace the stairs. You’d be hard-pressed to find better value in Castello.

Reviews

  • Location and wonderful staff make Casa Verardo a winner! – Lc3 from United States – 14 July 2025 (9/10)

I love this boutique hotel. The staff is always amazing and they helped us in so many ways. The best way to get to this hotel is to have them arrange transport from the train station or airport via a private water taxi. They also helped us arrange dinner reservations every night as well as a wonderful musical event with three tenors and a strings Orchestra. All of the front desk staff are wonderful and I especially want to thank Ilaria and Federico for going above and beyond. Rest assured I will return next time I am in Venice!

What could be improved: Rooms in Venice can be small so call the staff and book accordingly. Ilaria was able to accommodate my sister with a larger room and my older parents with a walk in shower.

  • Superb – Jess from United States – 29 June 2025 (9/10)

I very much enjoyed my stay at this hotel. We booked 2 rooms for 5 adults and 1 child (10y/o)–a suite with 2 bedrooms and a pullout couch, and then a room with a full bed. Both were great. En suite bathrooms, AC. The suite is in a separate building from the main hotel, but it is just across the bridge so no big deal. But something to know if booking with a lot of kids and need to coordinate with adults. The staff were wonderful. Included breakfast was great. I would stay here again. Location is great–short walk to St. Mark's but also not immediately adjacent and overrun with foot traffic.

  • Exceptional – Kenneth from United Kingdom – 28 June 2025 (10/10)

What could be improved: Room a little cramped but it's Venice.

  • Perfect location, perfect service, and employees, perfect everything – Wood from United States – 9 June 2025 (10/10)

Everything was perfect about this hotel. The location, the interior design, the service, and the food. It truly made our stay in Venice. The employees went above and beyond and truly took good care of us and made everything so much more convenient for us. I would stay there in a heartbeat again.

What could be improved: Nothing. It was perfect.
