Hotel Description
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at San Marco Vallaresso – you know, that stop right by the Grand Canal where the gondol10:00 a.m. bustle hits you like a wave, all those tourists snapping selfies with the basilica in the background. Anyway, from there, it’s just a quick five-minute wander down Calle Vallaresso, past those fancy boutiques on Calle Larga XXII Marzo (great for window-shopping if you’re into designer stuff, but honestly, the prices will make your eyes water), and you hit Hotel Kette tucked away on a quiet side canal. It’s one of those classic Venetian spots – a converted 16th-century palace, I think – with that old-world charm that makes you feel like you’ve time-traveled. Check-in was a breeze; the front desk folks were all smiles, even though I showed up sweaty from lugging my bag over a couple of bridges. No elevators in these historic buildings, mind you – well, there is one, but it’s tiny, like it was built for elves – so pack light if you’re not up for stairs.
What really sold me on the place was how it balances that central San Marco buzz with a surprising sense of calm. My room overlooked a narrow rio (that’s a small canal for the uninitiated), and mornings started with the gentle lap of water against the walls and the distant clang of church bells – San Moisè is basically next door, so you get that authentic soundtrack without the full-on Piazza chaos. The rooms are cozy, sort of compact like most in Venice (I mean, space is at a premium here), with these heavy brocade curtains and marble bathrooms that feel luxurious but not over-the-top. Breakfast is served in a sunny courtyard – think fresh croissants, cappuccinos that hit the spot, and maybe some prosciutto if you’re feeling indulgent – though it can get crowded in high season, like July when the whole city’s a sauna. Oh, and if you’re into opera, La Fenice theater is literally a stone’s throw away; I caught a show there one night and walked back in under ten minutes, dodging the evening passeggiata crowds. Minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can be spotty in the older wings – typical for these buildings with their thick stone walls – but hey, you’re in Venice; put the phone down and stare at the water taxis zipping by.
All in all, Hotel Kette’s that sweet spot for a four-star stay – the 8.5 rating feels spot-on, nothing flashy but reliably solid, especially if you’re here for a romantic getaway or just to soak up the city’s magic without breaking the bank. I’d say go in shoulder season, like April or October, when the narrow streets aren’t jammed and you can actually hear yourself think. It’s not perfect – noise from early-morning deliveries can creep in if your room’s street-facing – but that’s Venice for you, raw and real. If you’re plotting your first trip, this place makes exploring easy: hop a boat to the Rialto Market for fresh produce, or stroll over to the Accademia Bridge for those postcard views. Trust me, you’ll leave with stories, maybe a slight addiction to spritz, and zero regrets.

We also like the tour of the glass blowing in Murano, that was offered at the reception desk.
What could be improved: I thought I booked a window to the canal, but mistakenly didn’t. We stayed here before with a window.Ashok from Oman – 8 March 2025 (8/10)

It’s a very pretty hotel, perfectly comfortable and quiet, but also in a great location
What could be improved: It’s a little dated and the rooms are quite small, but fit for the purpose of a long weekendSalehi from France – 20 February 2025 (8/10)
Location is perfect. Staff were very friendly. Beds are very comfortable. I had a perfect sleep.
What could be improved: To be honest I liked everything. I deduct two points, 1 for breakfast as there was no scrambled egg and bread selection was limited. and another 1 for shower and bath. Shower was over bath. Apart from these two small points, everything else was great.Murtezan from North Macedonia – 6 February 2025 (9/10)
