Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Hotel Palazzo Abadessa almost by accident last spring, when I was dodging the usual Venice crowds around San Marco and decided to base myself in Cannaregio instead – that northern sestiere that’s got more of a lived-in vibe, with locals actually hanging laundry out and kids playing in the campos. It’s tucked away on Calle Priuli, this narrow little alley off the main drag of Strada Nova, and honestly, finding it felt like uncovering a secret – no big signs, just a discreet door that opens into what used to be a 16th-century palazzo. I mean, stepping inside after lugging my bag from the Ca’ d’Oro vaporetto stop (it’s only a five-minute walk, thank goodness, since Venice isn’t exactly suitcase-friendly), the first thing that hit me was the hush – like the city’s constant hum of tourists and boat engines just melted away. The lobby’s all frescoed ceilings and antique furniture that doesn’t feel stuffy, more like you’re crashing at some eccentric aunt’s place, and the staff? Super welcoming, with that genuine Italian warmth; they even sorted my late check-in without a fuss, handing over a key that looked like it belonged in a museum.
What really sold me on the place – and I’ve stayed in a few Venice spots over the years – is how it blends that old-world charm with stuff that actually makes your trip easier. The rooms are on the smaller side, sure, like most historic buildings here (mine overlooked the garden, which was a godsend for some morning quiet amid the pigeons cooing), but they’re decked out with these massive wooden beams, silk wallpapers, and beds that swallow you up after a day of pounding the pavements. Breakfast in the garden courtyard is a highlight – think fresh cornetti, cappuccino that doesn’t taste like tourist trap swill, and the scent of blooming jasmine mixing with the faint salty whiff from the nearby canal. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms, and if you’re there in high summer, the lack of AC in some spots might make you sweat a bit (though they do have fans). But wandering out to nearby gems like the Jewish Ghetto for a quiet evening spritz or popping into a bacaro on Rio Terà San Leonardo for cicchetti – it’s all right there, without the San Polo throngs. Noise-wise, it’s blissfully low-key compared to central spots; you might hear church bells from Madonna dell’Orto in the distance, but nothing that disrupts sleep.
All in all, if you’re after a Venice stay that feels authentic rather than just a pit stop, Palazzo Abadessa is worth it – especially off-season when rates dip and the city’s magic really shines without the hordes. I’ve recommended it to friends who want that mix of history and comfort, and yeah, with its 4-star setup and solid 8.9 rating, it delivers without the pretension. Just pack light, watch your step on those uneven calles, and you’ll leave feeling like you’ve got a piece of real Venice in your pocket.

Ample breakfast, elegant ornate quiet room, location just the right amount of out-of-the-way.
What could be improved: It would have been nice if a larger common area were available, but the building didn't permit it.Lavanya from India – 15 March 2025 (9/10)
