Hotel Description
I remember the first time I wandered into Dorsoduro – you know, that quieter slice of Venice where the canals feel a bit more like secrets than spectacles. I’d hopped off the vaporetto at Ca’ Rezzonico, dodging the usual tourist crush around San Marco, and followed the winding calles toward Dorsoduro 2658. Il Buco della Suora – yeah, the name’s a quirky nod to some old legend about a nun’s hideaway, or so the locals whisper – popped up in this narrow alley off Fondamenta Gherardini, tucked away like it was waiting for folks who actually want to live Venice rather than just snap photos of it. Honestly, arriving felt like stepping into a well-kept secret; the entrance is unassuming, with these weathered stone steps that creak just a little underfoot, and the air carries that faint, briny tang from the nearby Giudecca Canal mixed with espresso from a hidden caffè around the corner. Check-in was a breeze – no long lines or fuss, just a warm smile from the owner who chatted about the best time to hit the nearby Squero di San Trovaso, that ancient gondola workshop where you can watch craftsmen at work if you time it right in the mornings.
What really hooked me, though, was how the place blends that old-Venice charm with just enough modern comfort to make you forget you’re in a city built on water. It’s a 4-star spot with a stellar 9.8 rating for good reason – the rooms are cozy, not massive, but they’ve got these exposed wooden beams that make you feel like you’re in a Renaissance painting, and the beds? Oh man, plush enough to sink into after a day of pounding pavements. I stayed in one overlooking a tiny courtyard, and mornings started with the soft coo of pigeons and the distant hum of boats – way quieter than the racket over in Cannaregio during high season, I mean, summer can be brutal with crowds, but Dorsoduro stays mellow, especially in the evenings when folks spill out onto Campo Santa Margherita for aperitivi. Breakfast was a highlight, actually – fresh cornetti and cappuccino served in this sun-dappled terrace, though fair warning, it’s not a massive spread, more intimate, which suits the vibe. Staff were spot-on, sharing tips like avoiding the overpriced gondolas and instead strolling the Zattere promenade at sunset for those killer views of San Giorgio Maggiore. One minor gripe? No elevator, so pack light if stairs aren’t your thing – but hey, it’s Venice, everything’s a bit of a workout.
All in all, if you’re chasing that authentic Venice escape without the chaos, Il Buco della Suora is a gem. It’s not about flashy amenities; it’s the little things, like curling up with a book in their library nook while rain patters on the canal outside, or how it’s just a short walk to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection – I spent a whole afternoon there, lost in the art, and popped back for a quick siesta. Well, sort of – Venice doesn’t really do quiet afternoons, but this place comes close. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the fog rolls in and the whole area feels like your own private storybook. If you’re tired of cookie-cutter hotels, this one’s got soul – book it, wander Dorsoduro, and thank me later.

We absolutely loved our first trip to Venice and this awesome property provided us with the perfect location to maximise – Mark from New Zealand – 13 December 2023 (10/10)
Excellent location. Very modern, clean and ‘fun’ place to stay with the way they have furnished it appropriately including a cool emphasis on music.
What could be improved: Loved it.Perfect option for staying in Venice with a family. – Kate from United Kingdom – 1 November 2023 (9/10)
Great location. Central with easy access to all main sights but in a quiet, residential area away from the crowds. Beautiful apartment full of quirky artefacts. Spacious for a family and far better value than hotels. Felt much more authentic.
What could be improved: Nothing really. Slightly unpleasant smell occasionally but to be expected when you’re near water all the time.An absolute treasure away from the crowds! – Mara from United States – 14 October 2023 (10/10)
Cristina is a FABULOUS host! She sent us a very detailed letter of instruction prior to us getting to her lovely apartment and it was full with precious information including the Wi-Fi password. She was always quick to respond and very caring about ensuring we were having a positive experience. Her place is more spacious than we realized and we loved it! The bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked great and was definitely a plus. We made espresso in the morning and just enjoyed the great location.
What could be improved: Nothing… it was perfect!Exceptional – Artem from Ukraine – 4 May 2023 (10/10)
we liked absolutely everything. true gem of Venice
An amazing stay – Anna from United Kingdom – 31 December 2022 (10/10)
This is quite the most lovely holiday apartment we have ever experienced – full of personal touches, a great record collection, a projector the kids all loved, a kitchen we loved cooking in – and in a fascinating area of Venice, a few minutes from a great butcher, stalls selling fish and veg, and wine from a cask. The only problem was having to leave ! A truly heavenly stay.
A joy to have a courtyard too – and two bathrooms was a big plus for our tribe of 5. Really comfortable beds (I invariably get back ache from holiday rentals – not the case here). Decor to die for. I hope we’ll be back before too long.
What could be improved: It was perfect in every way.Perfetto. – Roy from Israel – 2 August 2022 (10/10)
Buco della suora is a special Airbnb. We appreciated the design, all the small details, starting from the equipped kitchen to the marshal speaker. The atmosphere is super cozy and elegant at the same time. Home away from home.
What could be improved: The flat is old (in a good way) and the bricks are crumbling, I guess there is nothing you can do with it, and the owners write about it honestly. There is a bit of a strange smell. But nothing that ruined our perfect stay in the house. Don't hesitate.Un bon plan pour découvrir Venise loin des endroits bruyants mais près de l'essentiel. – Pascal from France – 5 January 2024 (10/10)
Nous avons apprécié l'aspect typique du logement, l'impression de loger comme un local.
Quartier très tranquille, et finalement pas très loin de ce qu'il faut voir à Venise.
