Lanterna Di Marco Polo Overview

First Impressions

Walking through the narrow Venetian streets to find Lanterna Di Marco Polo honestly feels like you’re following breadcrumbs to a hidden gem. This three-star property sits right in the San Marco district, and I mean really in the thick of things — you’re basically steps away from St. Mark’s Square without the tourist hotel prices that usually come with that kind of location. The building itself has that weathered Venetian charm you’d expect, nothing flashy, but there’s something authentic about the way it blends into the neighborhood.

Location That Actually Matters

You know what’s rare in Venice? Finding a place where couples consistently give the location a 9.7 rating, and honestly, I get it. From here, you can stumble to the Doge’s Palace in about three minutes, grab an early morning coffee at one of those tiny local bars before the crowds hit, and still make it back for a quick rest between sightseeing marathons. The thing about staying in San Marco is that you’re not just close to the big attractions — you’re actually living in the postcard for a few days. Sure, it gets busy during the day, but early mornings and evenings? Pure magic.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully arranged — and let’s be real, you’re not coming to Venice to hang out in your hotel anyway. What I appreciated was how they managed to fit everything you need without making it feel cramped. The windows opened to those classic Venetian views (though don’t expect sweeping canal panoramas at this price point), and the bed was actually comfortable, which isn’t always a given in historic buildings. The bathroom was modern enough to work properly but kept some of that old-world character that makes you feel like you’re really in Venice, not some generic hotel chain.

Morning Fuel

The continental breakfast setup works well for what it is — nothing elaborate, but you’ll find decent coffee, fresh pastries, and enough to get you started before heading out to explore. I actually liked that it wasn’t trying to be something it’s not; instead of a mediocre buffet, they focus on doing the basics right. Plus, starting your day with proper Italian coffee while planning your route through the city just feels right. The breakfast area has a cozy, almost family-run feel that bigger hotels can’t really replicate.

Why Guests Love It

Here’s the thing about Lanterna Di Marco Polo — it delivers exactly what most people actually want from a Venice hotel without the pretense. You get that prime San Marco location that couples rave about, you’re surrounded by the real Venice experience, and you’re not paying five-star prices for amenities you won’t use anyway. The 8.2 rating makes sense because it’s not trying to be everything to everyone; it’s just a solid, well-located base for exploring one of the world’s most incredible cities. When you can walk to the major sights, duck into authentic bacari for cicchetti, and still feel like you’re staying somewhere with character rather than a tourist factory, that’s pretty much the Venice hotel sweet spot.

To book hotel in Venice for Carnival, travelers reserve palazzo suites overlooking mask-lined canals.

  • Fortunata from Italy – 18 December 2024 (7/10)

Everything was fine a part for the bathroom too small. We had to open the shower door to be able to use the toilet.

The room is clean with a big bed. The location is great, just a few minutes from the main square.
    The staff is very friendly.

What could be improved: We couldn’t turn on the AC to cool the room so we had to open the windows but we ended up with a lot of mosquitoes.

  • Marilyn from United Kingdom – 17 October 2024 (8/10)

We had a lovely warm welcome and were soon settled and raring to go! Breakfast was available in the cafe next door to the hotel. The beds were comfortable, the room and the bathroom clean, and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
The hotel is in a great position, and like all first-timers we got lost every day – but that was part of the fun! Every time we went the wrong way, we found another courtyard, or restaurant, that we wouldn't have otherwise. Satnav helped, and the hotel provided a great map.

What could be improved: It was disappointing to be on the third floor, with no lift, and it was a struggle to climb with our bags (we are in our 70's). I should have asked the question when booking, but didn't think of it.
However, we didn't let it spoil our stay and would go back to the hotel – with a request for a lower floor!
