Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Le case di Rachele – Ca’ Lorenzo e Ca’ Raquel almost by accident last spring, right when Venice was shaking off the winter chill but before the summer hordes descended. Tucked away on Calle del Dose in the Castello sestiere – you know, that quieter eastern neighborhood where locals actually live and the air smells faintly of salt from the lagoon mixed with fresh bread from the corner forno – it’s on the third floor (or “piano” as they say here), which means a bit of a climb up those worn stone stairs. No elevator, honestly, so pack light if you’re not up for the workout, but hey, it adds to that authentic Venetian vibe. I arrived via vaporetto from the airport, hopping off at San Zaccaria and weaving through the back alleys past Campo San Zaccaria – it’s about a 10-minute walk, dodging the occasional delivery cart and inhaling that mix of canal water and blooming jasmine. Check-in was a breeze; the host, this warm local woman named Maria (I think? Well, something like that), handed over the keys with a quick rundown in broken English about where to grab the best cicchetti nearby. My spot was Ca’ Raquel, a cozy apartment-style setup with exposed wooden beams and those classic terrazzo floors that feel cool underfoot even on warmer days.
What really won me over, though, was how it felt like borrowing a friend’s place rather than some sterile hotel room – you get a full kitchenette stocked with basics, perfect for whipping up espresso from the market at Rialto (just a 15-minute stroll away, crossing the bridge over Rio di San Lorenzo). The views from the windows overlook a narrow calle where you can hear gondoliers calling out in the distance, but it’s surprisingly quiet at night, especially compared to the chaos around San Marco. I mean, Castello has that lived-in charm; you’re steps from hidden gems like the Libreria Acqua Alta bookstore or the peaceful gardens at Sant’Elena if you need a break from the tourist buzz. The beds are comfy, with those crisp linens that smell faintly of lavender detergent, and the bathroom’s modern enough – rainfall shower and all – but don’t expect a spa; it’s more about practicality. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty during peak hours, probably from all the thick walls in these old palazzos, but it forced me to unplug and wander more, which was a blessing in disguise. In high season, like July, book early because spots fill up fast, and avoid arriving during acqua alta if you’re not into wading.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re actually living in Venice rather than just passing through – maybe with a partner or small family, since the setups sleep up to four comfortably – this place is a gem. It’s got that 9.4 rating for a reason, blending four-star touches with genuine soul. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the off-season when the fog rolls in and the whole city feels like your secret. Just remember to grab a spritz at the tiny bar on nearby Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa – trust me, it’s the perfect end to a day of exploring.

Thank you for a lovely stay in Venice and making our time perfect! – Terry from United Kingdom – 8 July 2024 (9/10)
Good location, clean, and good sized apartment, air con was perfect and a must when you are travelling in summer in Venice. Staff were lovely and very accommodating.
What could be improved: Lots of stairs to access it – not ideal for people with mobility issues however this is to be expected in Venice.A fine, well-appointed apartment in a great location. – Thomas from United States – 4 May 2024 (9/10)
Cleanliness and full-feature kitchen plus laundry in kitchen with drying rack on sun deck. The entire facility is in excellent condition. Liked the large shower.
What could be improved: The apartment is on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and that fact was clear when we rented it. The property manager Ivanka and her sister were very kind in helping us move our luggage up to the apartment. I'm 88 yrs old and my wife is 77. We're both in good physical health so the 63 steps to access the apartment was not a problem; we got some good exercise in the process. However, moving the luggage could have been an issue without their assistance. If you see an opening, BOOK IT! – Jason from United States – 8 April 2024 (10/10)
Not only were the hosts very friendly and helpful, the apartment was wonderful. You first enter through an old gangway that opens into a charming courtyard. Then into an amazing old androne right on a canal. The room we stayed in had a lovely view of Campo S. Maria Formosa.
The Apartment was comfortable, clean, and very large. It was so convenient to everything. We would definitely stay here again!Superb – Carol from United States – 28 October 2023 (9/10)
Rachele's delightful daughter Matilde led us to the apartment, where we left our bags before check in. Apartment is spacious with a beautiful view of Campo Santa Maria Formosa. Location is wonderful in a neighborhood with numerous canals and gondolas. I
What could be improved: Apartment was a little cold, but perhaps Rachele could have addressed this issue if we had contacted her.Thank you for helping to make our stay in Venice an amazing experience! – Eric from United States – 4 October 2023 (10/10)
