Locanda Barbarigo Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Locanda Barbarigo along the Fondamenta Duodo o Barbarigo, you immediately sense you’ve found something special. This three-star boutique property sits right in San Marco — and I mean really in the heart of things, not just claiming to be. The building itself has that weathered Venetian charm that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a postcard, but without the tourist trap vibe you get at some of the bigger hotels around here.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what I love about this spot in Venice — you’re genuinely in the thick of everything, but on a quieter fondamenta that doesn’t get the crushing foot traffic of the main thoroughfares. You can walk to St. Mark’s Square in about five minutes, but when you come back to your room at night, it’s actually peaceful enough to sleep. The couples who stay here get it — there’s something romantic about having your own little corner of San Marco without feeling like you’re camping out in Times Square, you know?
The Accommodations
The rooms are what you’d expect from a well-run three-star in Venice — not huge, but thoughtfully designed to make the most of the space. I mean, this is Venice we’re talking about, so if you’re expecting a sprawling suite, you’re in the wrong city entirely. What impressed me was how they’ve managed to fit in modern amenities without losing that authentic Venetian character. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms work properly (which honestly isn’t always a given in these old buildings), and there’s enough storage space for a week’s worth of clothes.
What Sets It Apart
You know what really struck me about this place? It’s the kind of hotel where the staff actually knows the neighborhood. They don’t just hand you a generic map and wish you luck — they’ll tell you which bacaro serves the best cicchetti or how to avoid the crowds when walking to the Rialto. The property itself feels more like a well-kept secret than a commercial operation, which is getting harder and harder to find in Venice these days. There’s no restaurant on-site, but honestly, with the incredible dining options literally steps from your door, that’s not really a problem.
Why Guests Love It
The location score of 9.5 isn’t just a number — it reflects what happens when you find that sweet spot between accessibility and authenticity. Couples especially seem to appreciate having a romantic base that doesn’t feel like every other tourist is breathing down your neck. You’re close enough to everything that matters, but far enough from the chaos to actually enjoy each other’s company. Plus, there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that feels like it belongs in Venice, rather than a generic hotel that could be anywhere in the world.
Hotels near me in Venice offer water taxi moorings, Basilica queues, and gondola lessons steps away.

Superb location within a few minutes walk to all the main sites and vaporetto. Laura was extremely helpful and welcoming. We were in room 5 in the attic which although tight on headroom if you’re over 6ft was very spacious and comfortable.
What could be improved: Probably the world’s smallest shower with the narrowest entrance to match!Rory from Ireland – 19 November 2023 (9/10)
Fantastic location to all the main sights and the ferry stop from the Airport.
What could be improved: Nothing to report
