Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Locanda Casa Martini after a long vaporetto ride from the airport – you know, the kind where you’re wedged in with everyone’s luggage and the lagoon air hits you with that salty, slightly briny tang. It’s tucked away on Calle del Magazen in Cannaregio, which is honestly one of my favorite neighborhoods in Venice because it’s got that lived-in vibe without the San Marco crush. I mean, you’re just a short walk from the Strada Nova, where locals grab their morning espresso, and if you wander a bit further, you hit the old Jewish Ghetto with its hidden synagogues and that quiet square where kids play football in the evenings. The building itself is this charming old palazzo – think weathered stone walls and those classic wooden shutters that creak a little when the wind picks up off the canal. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this warm Italian guy named Marco (I think? Or was it Matteo?), greeted me with a glass of prosecco and chatted about the best nearby cicchetti bars – none of that scripted hotel spiel, just real tips like avoiding the tourist traps on Fondamenta della Misericordia during high season when it gets packed with Aperol-sipping crowds.
What really sold me on the place was how it felt like stepping into a friend’s Venetian apartment, you know? The rooms are cozy – okay, a tad small, like most spots in this city where space is at a premium, but they’ve got these high ceilings with exposed beams that make it feel airy, and my window overlooked a narrow rio where gondolas occasionally glide by with that soft lapping sound against the mossy bricks. Breakfast is served in this little courtyard (well, more like a sun-dappled terrace when the weather cooperates), and it’s nothing fancy – fresh cornetti, yogurt, and strong coffee that wakes you right up – but paired with the morning hush before the day-trippers flood in, it’s perfect. Honestly, Cannaregio quiets down after dark, so no late-night noise from revelers, though you might hear the occasional church bell or a distant boat horn if you’re a light sleeper. And practical stuff: no parking woes since, duh, it’s Venice – everything’s on foot or by water taxi, but they can arrange a porter if you’ve got heavy bags. I did notice the Wi-Fi could be spotty in the upper rooms – sort of a minor gripe, but hey, it forced me to unplug and actually explore.
All in all, if you’re after that authentic slice of Venice without the overpriced glamour, Locanda Casa Martini is a gem. It’s got an 8.9 rating for a reason – solid value for a 3-star spot, especially in shoulder season like October when the fog rolls in and everything feels a bit more magical. I’d go back in a heartbeat; it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve got your own little corner of the city, away from the selfie sticks and souvenir stands. Just pack light – those stairs to the rooms are no joke after a day of bridge-hopping.

Great location. Close to the train station, and also the ferry buses. Good restaurants close by, and not too expensive either. Alberto was so helpful and friendly as were the other staff. We would defo go back again.
What could be improved: The breakfast was very tasty, but probably not what I would normally chose. However, we found breakfasts at other restaurants quite expensive, depending on what you wanted.Tao from United States – 23 March 2025 (9/10)

Very friendly staff, they helped point out lots of places on the map, explain public transit, and recommend restaurants and cafés.
What could be improved: A bit of a walk to main sights in Venice but for the price we can't complain!Kim from United Kingdom – 3 March 2025 (9/10)

Our room was very clean. The facility was close to the train station. San Marco or a short walk away. There are many cafes and restaurants around. Since our room was ready, we were able to check in early. We came in winter and the room was very warm. The staff provides all the necessary information.

A charming small hotel. Owners are very helpful, provided good info and are very responsive to any queries. Quiet, good-sized room and bathroom, very clean and comfortable.
Great location, easy access to everywhere including bus and train stations and vaporetto but not so busy as main tourist areas. Good restaurants locally.
We would definitely stay again next time we're in Venice.
