Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Locanda del Ghetto kind of by accident last spring, right when the cherry blossoms were starting to pop along the canals – well, not actual cherry blossoms, but those little flowering vines that cling to the old brick walls in Cannaregio. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at Guglie, dodging a few locals with their shopping trolleys, and wandered down Fondamenta degli Ormesini, where the air smells like fresh bread from that tiny bakery on the corner (Panificio Volpe, if memory serves – grab a zaleti cookie if you’re there early). The hotel’s tucked away on Cannaregio 2893, in the heart of the old Jewish Ghetto, which honestly feels like a hidden pocket of Venice that hasn’t been overrun by the San Marco selfie crowds yet. I mean, it’s just a short stroll from Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, with its historic synagogues and that poignant Holocaust memorial – the kind of place where you can actually hear birds chirping instead of tour groups shuffling by. Checking in was a breeze; the owner, this warm guy named Marco (or was it Matteo? Anyway, super friendly), handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best cicchetti spots nearby, like that hole-in-the-wall osteria on Rio Terà San Leonardo. No parking hassles, obviously – this is Venice, so you’re walking or boating everything – but they sorted my luggage from the station without a fuss.
What really won me over, though, was how the place blends that classic Venetian charm with just enough modern comfort to make you forget you’re in a 16th-century building. My room overlooked a quiet rio, with these heavy velvet curtains that blocked out the early morning light from the water taxis – honestly, it was a lifesaver after a late night exploring. The bed was plush, like sinking into a cloud, and the bathroom had those heated marble floors that feel amazing on chilly evenings (Venice gets surprisingly nippy in shoulder season). Breakfast is served in this cozy courtyard – think fresh cornetti, cappuccino that actually tastes like it’s from Italy, not some watered-down tourist trap, and maybe a slice of frittata if you’re lucky. It’s not huge, but that’s part of the appeal; it feels intimate, like staying at a friend’s place. Oh, and the Wi-Fi is solid – I streamed a movie one rainy afternoon without a glitch, which is more than I can say for some fancier spots in Dorsoduro. That said, the stairs are steep and there’s no elevator, so if you’re hauling heavy bags or have mobility issues, pack light or ask for a ground-floor room. Noise-wise, it’s blissfully quiet after dark, except for the occasional church bell from Santa Maria dell’Orto echoing softly – sort of romantic, if you ask me.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that lets you dip into real Venetian life without the chaos of the Grand Canal mobs, Locanda del Ghetto is a gem. It’s got that 4-star polish with a 9.3 rating that feels earned, not hyped – I’ve stayed in pricier places that didn’t come close. Come in April or October to avoid the summer swarms; you’ll thank me when you’re wandering those narrow calli at dusk, gelato in hand, feeling like you’ve got the city to yourself. Just don’t tell too many people – I want to keep this secret for my next trip.

What could be improved: NothingHistory at the doorstep. Quiet, good location, spacious room – Chad from United States – 27 June 2025 (8/10)
The location was great. We walked all of Venice from here and it was in a nice quiet piazza with history. The room was quiet and easy to get in. The host was very friendly and helpful, and they provided many suggestions. I had to ask for extra pillows and they came later at night to bring them to us.
What could be improved: The room was a bit outdated, the bed wasn’t that comfortable, the shower was open with no curtain so we made a mess, but the biggest bummer was that the air conditioning didn’t do anything. The room stayed at 22°C no matter what you set the thermostat to.Perfect. – Cheryl from United States – 22 June 2025 (10/10)
Very helpful staff. Great location. Easy and convenient breakfast.
Excellent location, service and cleanliness! – Meghana from Singapore – 15 June 2025 (10/10)
Excellent location away from the hustle and bustle of Venice, in a quiet neighbourhood, yet just 5 minutes/ a bridge away from all the fun! Hosts were really nice and were quick to give recommendations. We felt that the safety of the apartment was very good, tucked away in the Jewish neighbourhood. The hosts also gave us some local recommendations which really came in handy.
Overall, 10/10 recommend based on their location, service and cleanliness, especially if you’re looking for a quiet stay, but a walk away from all the main attractions of Venice!loved our stay – Maree from Australia – 12 June 2025 (10/10)
