Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Locanda Sant’Agostin almost by accident last spring, right when Venice was shaking off the winter chill but before the summer crowds turned the canals into a mosh pit. I’d hopped off the vaporetto at San Tomà stop – that’s just a quick wander away, maybe five minutes if you’re not lugging a massive suitcase over those uneven cobblestones – and there it was, tucked into Campo Sant’Agostin in the heart of San Polo. It’s this unassuming little spot, a 3-star that’s been around forever, with that classic Venetian facade of weathered brick and flower boxes spilling over with geraniums. Honestly, checking in felt more like arriving at a friend’s place than a hotel; the owner – this chatty guy named Marco, I think – handed over the keys with a quick rundown of where to grab the best cicchetti nearby, no stiff formalities or endless paperwork. My room was on the second floor, overlooking the campo, and yeah, it was cozy in that old-world way – think creaky wooden floors that whisper underfoot, a bed with linens that smelled faintly of lavender, and a bathroom that, well, was compact but spotless, with hot water that actually stayed hot, which isn’t always a given in these historic buildings. I mean, don’t expect a spa or anything flashy, but there’s a little breakfast nook downstairs where they serve fresh cornetti and cappuccino that hits the spot first thing in the morning.
What really won me over, though, was how plugged into the neighborhood it felt – you’re smack in San Polo, so you’re dodging the tourist hordes around San Marco but still close enough to pop over to the Rialto Market for some fresh squid or those tiny artichokes they fry up (head there early, like before 9 AM, or it’s chaos). The campo itself is this quiet square where locals actually hang out; I remember sitting on a bench one evening, listening to church bells from Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari – that’s just a stone’s throw away, maybe a two-minute walk down Calle Larga – and watching kids kick a ball around while the air carried that briny canal scent mixed with someone baking bread nearby. Rooms are simple, sure, with air conditioning that hums a bit loudly in the summer heat (pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper), but they come with these thoughtful touches like a mini-fridge stocked with water and a safe that’s big enough for your passport and extras. Oh, and no elevator – it’s an old palazzo, after all – so if stairs are an issue, ask for a ground-floor room ahead of time. Evenings can get a tad noisy from the nearby osterias, especially on weekends when folks spill out onto the streets with their spritzes, but it dies down by midnight, leaving you with that serene Venetian hush, broken only by the occasional boat chugging by on the Rio San Polo.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants to feel like you’re living in Venice rather than just visiting – you know, weaving through back alleys to spots like Campo San Polo for a gelato or catching a quick ferry to Murano – this place is a gem. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms, and breakfast is basic (no eggs or anything hot unless you ask), but with an 8.6 rating that feels earned from real stays like mine, it’s a solid pick for couples or solo travelers on a budget. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the fog rolls in and the whole city feels like your own little secret. Just remember to wear comfy shoes – those bridges add up!

What a cute hotel!!! Had a great stay here in Venice! Hotel was right in the middle of historic Venice, easy to walk around. Room was clean and we even got one of the small balconies that looked out onto a canal! Staff were great! What a great experience.

The location is great and the room is very comfortable! The bathroom is also very clean and nice. We were shocked at how nice the room was since we were not expecting this excellent of a quality considering the affordable price! 🙂

The staff was amazing and friendly, and the breakfast was plentiful with many options. It's about 15 min walk from the bus station. Great area of town; quiet.

Location was perfect, staff were friendly and spoke English. We got there 2 hours before check in but they allow you to store your bags so that was a bonus..
What could be improved: Nothing.. everything was perfect… rooms were a bit too warm and we couldn't turn the heating off ..Elaine from United Kingdom – 2 November 2024 (8/10)
The total look of the room was stunning. Very in keeping with the whole Venice scene.
What could be improved: There was no kettle. We never found the insect plug in until the morning. Two late 20 odd nasty bites each. Should be put in before we went knowing we were on route. At least pointed out when shown into the room.Dane from United States – 26 October 2024 (8/10)
What could be improved: Included breakfast choices were a bit limited
