No elevator, mind you, but that’s par for the course in these historic palazzos. Check-in was a breeze though; the host, this friendly woman named Maria (or was it Marta? Anyway, she was a gem), handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the neighborhood in broken English, and just like that, I was in.

What really won me over was how the place feels like a proper Venetian hideaway – not some sterile chain hotel, but a cozy apartment-style setup with that 4-star polish. The rooms are spacious, with these high ceilings and original wooden beams that creak a little when the wind picks up off the lagoon. I stayed in one overlooking the corte, and mornings started with the smell of fresh bread wafting up from the bakery downstairs – nothing beats that, especially with the free coffee maker in the kitchenette. It’s got all the practical bits: super clean bathroom with those fluffy towels that actually dry you off, Wi-Fi that doesn’t glitch out (crucial for mapping your way to the Arsenale), and air conditioning that hums quietly through those sticky summer nights. Oh, and speaking of noise – it’s surprisingly peaceful here, even though Garibaldi can get buzzy with evening passeggiata crowds. You might hear church bells from San Pietro di Castello nearby, or the occasional boat horn from the canal, but it’s more atmospheric than annoying. I wandered out one evening to that tiny osteria around the corner on Via Tana – locals swear by their cicchetti – and it was just a five-minute stroll. If you’re into the Biennale gardens, they’re practically next door, perfect for a quiet afternoon escape from the Rialto madness.

Look, if you’re planning a trip to Venice and want something authentic without breaking the bank – it’s rated 9.1 for a reason – this is it. I mean, it’s not perfect; the location means you’re a good 20-minute walk or vaporetto ride to Piazza San Marco, so pack comfy shoes if you’re not into boats. But that’s the charm, right? You get the real neighborhood vibe, with kids playing in the campos and nonnas gossiping on benches, instead of just postcard views. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when Castello feels even more like your own secret spot. Trust me, after a day dodging tour groups, coming “home” here feels like a warm hug from the city itself.

  Great location close enough to San Marco but away from the crowds. Lots of great restaurants near by for dinner. Our host provided us with great recommendations of places to eat. Appreciated the air conditioning and the laundry options.

  A great location in the city, especially for those attending the Venice Biennale. You can see the sea from the window, and there are many excellent restaurants just down the street from the apartment.
