Breakfast was simple but spot-on – fresh cornetti, strong espresso, and those ripe tomatoes from the mainland markets – served in the garden when it’s warm. Oh, and no parking headaches here, obviously, since Venice is car-free; just leave your luggage at the station if you’re lugging too much, or grab a porter for a few euros.

All in all, if you’re after that elusive Venice calm – you know, the kind where you can actually hear yourself think amid the gondola serenades – Madama Garden Retreat nails it without trying too hard. It’s not flawless; the Wi-Fi dipped out once during a rainy afternoon (blame the thick stone walls, I suppose), and summer evenings might bring some lively chatter from nearby osterias, but nothing that earplugs couldn’t fix. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in shoulder season like April or October when the garden’s at its prettiest and the city’s not swarming.
