Palazzina Riello Overview
I remember stepping off the vaporetto at the Ca’ d’Oro stop – you know, that gorgeous Gothic palace on the Grand Canal – and weaving my way through the back alleys of Cannaregio to find Palazzina Riello. It’s tucked away on Calle Riello, this narrow little street that feels more like a locals’ secret than a tourist trap, right off the Rio di Cannaregio. Honestly, after dodging the crowds in San Marco all day, arriving here was like exhaling – the area’s got that authentic Venetian vibe, with old women chatting from windows and the faint smell of fresh bread from the bakery around the corner on Strada Nova. The hotel itself is in this charming 18th-century building, all exposed brick and wooden beams that make you feel like you’re staying in someone’s historic home rather than some sterile chain. Check-in was a breeze; the staff – a mix of friendly Italians who actually live in the neighborhood – handed over my key with a quick tip about the best nearby cicchetti bar, and there I was, settling into a room that overlooked a quiet courtyard. No elevator, mind you, so if you’re hauling heavy bags up those creaky stairs, well, pack light or ask for help – they were happy to grab mine.
What really won me over, though, was how the place balances old-world charm with the stuff you actually need on a trip. My room had these high ceilings and antique furnishings – think velvet armchairs and a four-poster bed that was ridiculously comfortable after a day of walking on those uneven cobblestones – but it wasn’t stuffy at all. There was modern air conditioning that whispered quietly (a godsend in Venice’s humid summers), and the bathroom had one of those rain showers that made mornings feel luxurious. Breakfast was served in this cozy ground-floor room, nothing fancy but spot-on: fresh cornetti, cappuccinos strong enough to wake the dead, and local cheeses that paired perfectly with the fruit. I mean, it’s not a massive spread, but it beats the overpriced cafes near the Rialto. And the location? You’re a short stroll from the Jewish Ghetto – that historic spot with its synagogues and kosher spots that most tourists skip – or you can hop on a boat to Murano for glass-blowing demos. Evenings were peaceful; the neighborhood quiets down after 10 p.m., save for the occasional splash of a gondola or distant church bells, which sort of lulls you to sleep. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the upper rooms during peak season (hello, July crowds), but hey, that’s Venice for you – forces you to unplug and enjoy the view.
All in all, if you’re after a slice of real Venice without the chaos of Piazza San Marco, Palazzina Riello is a gem. It’s got that 4-star polish with a 9-out-of-10 rating that feels earned, not inflated, and at rates that won’t break the bank compared to the glitzy spots on the Grand Canal. I’ve stayed in fancier places, but this one sticks with me – the way the morning light filters through those lace curtains, or grabbing a spritz at a nearby osteria recommended by the front desk. You know what? It’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who want to feel like they’re living in the city, not just visiting. Just book ahead for spring or fall when it’s less muggy, and you’ll thank me later.

What could be improved: The fridge was not working, but they offered us to move to another apartmentJelena from Austria – 13 March 2025 (9/10)
The location is really amazing, the apartment was very clean and cosy. It's very nice that they leave drinks in the fridge, snacks and tea and coffee.
What could be improved: The walls are super thin and I could hear everything from the apartment below. The check in instructions are not clearly communicated in advance, but fortunately I could call them when I arrived so it turned out great.Krisztian from Hungary – 9 March 2025 (9/10)
Nice location, good checkin, well equipped apartment. Drinks and snacks for free. Bed was large enough and comfortable. Good choice.
