Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Palazzina Veneziana kind of by accident last spring, right when Venice was shaking off the winter chill but before the summer hordes descended. It’s tucked away in Cannaregio, on that quiet stretch of Cannaregio 1510 – you know, just a stone’s throw from the Strada Nova, where locals grab their morning espresso and dodge the occasional delivery cart. Honestly, arriving there felt like stepping into one of those old Venetian novels; the building’s this charming little palazzo with faded frescoes peeking out from the facade, and as I hauled my suitcase over the uneven cobblestones from the vaporetto stop at Ca’ d’Oro (which is only about a five-minute walk, thank goodness, because Venice and luggage are not friends), I could already smell the faint salty tang of the lagoon mixed with blooming jasmine from a nearby courtyard. Check-in was a breeze – the staff, this mix of chatty Venetians and a few internationals, handed over my key with a genuine smile and a quick tip on avoiding the tourist traps around the Rialto Bridge. No robotic efficiency here; it was more like chatting with a friend who’d lived in the sestiere forever.

What really hooked me was how the place balances that old-world Venetian vibe with just enough modern comfort to make you forget you’re in a city built on water. My room – well, suite, actually – overlooked a narrow rio, and waking up to the soft lap of gondolas passing by (okay, mostly water taxis, but still poetic) was something else. The decor’s all high ceilings with exposed beams, plush bedding that smells faintly of lavender laundry soap, and these quirky antique mirrors that make you feel like you’re in a Merchant Ivory film. Breakfast downstairs is no frills but spot-on: fresh cornetti, strong coffee, and those little pots of yogurt with local honey – eaten in a sunny salon where you can hear the bells from the nearby Madonna dell’Orto church chiming away. It’s not perfect, mind you; the stairs can be a workout if you’ve got heavy bags (there’s an elevator, but it’s tiny and slow, like most in these historic spots), and during high season, you might catch some noise from the evening passeggiata along the fondamenta. But that’s Venice for you – authentic, a bit creaky, and utterly alive. I spent my afternoons wandering to the Jewish Ghetto, just a short stroll away, grabbing cicchetti at hidden bacari that tourists rarely find, and coming back to the hotel felt like returning home.

All in all, if you’re after a slice of real Venice without the San Marco crush, Palazzina Veneziana is a gem. It’s got that 4-star polish with an 8.9 rating that actually feels earned – not overhyped, just right for couples or solo travelers who want to linger over a spritz on the terrace as the sun sets. I mean, sure, it’s pricier in peak months like July, but book in shoulder season and you’ll thank me. It’s the kind of place that makes you rethink rushing through the city; instead, you slow down, soak in the textures – the cool marble floors underfoot, the distant hum of market vendors – and leave feeling like you’ve truly been there.

I am very grateful to the hotel owners for their support, and kind hospitality when I arrived at an inconvenient time due to flight delay. I dreamed of staying here someday. Every time I walked from the station to Canareggio, I looked at this house with a terrace and thought: what is it like inside? And now the dream has come true. This atmosphere is real Venice – silk, precious, Tintoretto mood. This is not my first trip to Venice, I walked it far and wide, to the Lido and Chioggia. And this place is one of the most wonderful and soulful in this city. And very close to the center… The interior is the quintessence of Venetian style. I speak as an architect and a fan of Venice. Maximum comfortable bed and bathroom. I admit, I took the second shower gel with me from the bathroom because the scent is just crazy. I am a perfume maniac, and I was incredibly pleased with these scents, chosen with such love by the owners of the Pallazzina.

Welcoming staff, charming and authentic environment in a fantastic location near the train station and surrounded by bars and restaurants. Prosecco, beer and soft drinks all included in room rate. Great value for money.

  • Jessie from United States – 31 March 2025 (9/10)

Amazing property and near the train station. Lots of good food around and the area isn’t as crowded or cramped as the other hotels we saw close to the square. Great view of the canal! Everything was pretty much within a mile distance. The place was very charming and rooms are a good size and clean. Rosalia is the sweetest and we loved talking to her! Definitely recommend this property.

We stayed in the room named "La Salute" and loved our terrace, probably most of all. It was a unique room and view of Canale di Cannaregio. For this room, we did sacrifice a little bit of space and a shower (bathtub with a hand wand instead); however, we felt that it was well worth it for the terrace view in the mornings and evenings. We were in Italy to explore, not leisure in the room. The staff was very courteous and kept our room very clean daily. We would choose Palazzina Veneziana on our visit back!

What could be improved: Room size and a tub in place of the shower were the two "negatives."

  • Aleksandra from Poland – 19 February 2025 (9/10)

Beautiful rooms kept in old Venetian style. It really felt like being in a palace.
Location is great – very near to railway station, you have bars to catch the coffee and snack, restaurants, grocery – whatever you need, however for short term trips the room is equipped over the expectations.
For the next visit I am more than convinced to come back to Palazzina Veneziana.

What could be improved: If you are fragile to noise, please keep in mind that as it is located right above the canal, so mornings might be a bit loud. Now also some construction on the other side of the canal is in process – it is not a fault of the Palazzina, I did not mind, as the stay in such beautiful place compensates such slight inconveniences.

It was a beautiful place to stay, so charming, clean and very comfortable with an excellent location! We loved our stay
