Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Palazzo Vendramin Costa almost by accident during one of those hazy Venetian afternoons when you’re wandering Cannaregio, trying to dodge the tourist throngs over in San Marco. It’s tucked away on Fondamenta de Ca’ Vendramin, right along a quiet stretch of canal – not the Grand Canal, mind you, but one of those narrower ones where you can actually hear the water lapping against the stones without all the gondola traffic. I mean, if you’re coming from Santa Lucia station, it’s a straightforward 10-minute walk along the Strada Nova, past those little bacari where locals grab cicchetti and spritz – honestly, stop at one on your way, it’ll set the mood. The building itself is this gorgeous old palazzo, all faded pink stucco and arched windows that scream 16th-century Venice, but without feeling like a museum. When I checked in, the staff were so laid-back – this one guy, Marco, chatted with me about the best time to hit the Rialto market (early morning, before the crowds, he said) – and they even upgraded my room because it was a slow week in October. No fuss, just a quick handover of the key and a map with handwritten notes on hidden spots nearby, like the old Jewish Ghetto just a bridge away, where you can find some killer kosher bakeries.

What really got me was how the place balances that historic charm with stuff that actually makes your stay comfortable – you know, the little things travelers obsess over. My room overlooked the canal, with these heavy velvet curtains that blocked out the early morning light from the vaporettos chugging by (they start around 6 a.m., but it’s more of a gentle hum than anything disruptive). The bed was massive, with linens that felt like they were spun from clouds – seriously, after a day pounding the pavements, sinking into it was bliss. There’s no elevator, though, which could be a drag if you’ve got heavy bags (I lugged mine up two flights and regretted that extra bottle of prosecco), but the views make up for it. Breakfast is served in this cozy courtyard – think fresh cornetti, cappuccino that smells like heaven, and maybe a pigeon or two eyeing your crumbs – and it’s included, which is a nice touch in pricey Venice. Oh, and the Wi-Fi is surprisingly zippy for an old building; I streamed a movie one rainy evening without a hitch. It’s in that sweet spot of Cannaregio where you’re close enough to the action – a quick boat ride to Piazza San Marco – but far from the souvenir hawkers and selfie sticks. Well, sort of – during high season in summer, the area buzzes a bit more, but nothing like the chaos elsewhere.

All in all, if you’re after a slice of real Venice without the over-the-top luxury price tag, this 4-star gem with its 9.3 rating (which feels spot-on) is where it’s at. It’s not perfect – the bathroom was a tad compact, and you might hear church bells from nearby San Geremia tolling at odd hours – but those quirks just add to the authenticity. I left feeling like I’d actually lived in the city for a bit, not just passed through. Book it for shoulder season if you can; that’s when Venice whispers its secrets, and places like Palazzo Vendramin Costa shine brightest.

Reviews

  • Lucy from Australia – 19 November 2024 (10/10)

Beautifully renovated Palazzo. Incredibly spacious with a top-notch entertaining kitchen. Bright/light. And the most important thing! An elevator.

What could be improved: Location in Canareggio is a little distant from all the major areas such as St Marks etc if you are a first-timer to Venice. However the district of Canareggio itself is vibrant and interesting with lots of locals living there. And ferries get you to the major places easily – so this is not a criticism at all.

  • Anna from United Kingdom – 28 November 2024 (10/10)

Amazing property in the perfect location. Had everything we needed and more.

  • Ronnie from United States – 1 November 2024 (10/10)

    Beautiful & very spacious

  • David from Ireland – 19 September 2024 (10/10)

The location was excellent, just off the main thoroughfare, which was busy but ideally located next to canals, restaurants, coffee shops etc, and a stones throw from the main areas, couldn’t be better located.
Property is in an old building with very modern interior and right on the canal.

  • Ryan from United States – 9 September 2024 (10/10)

Very friendly host, met us at the door to check in and gave us great recommendations.

  • Hollie from United Kingdom – 1 September 2024 (9/10)

Clean, as pictured, space seemed very good value for money, kitchen facilities very good if you are planning a longer stay. Host very pleasant and helpful.

What could be improved: Everything was great, our electricity did cut out at one point but this was resolved as quickly as possible.

  • Maya from Australia – 28 August 2024 (9/10)

Location was fantastic. The size of the apartment and the lounge/dining area were great.

What could be improved: Minor annoyances – no hooks for bath towels in the bathrooms except the main ensuite bathroom, very low light in the kitchen, no tea towel, no cutting board, no full length mirror, spotty wifi no extra supplies (toilet paper, toiletries). Very minor annoyances that wouldn't stop me from booking again.

  • Halina from Canada – 22 August 2024 (10/10)

Beatrice was extremely helpful, she was always available to answer questions, provide information as needed or to make travel arrangements. Property and its location was exceptional, walking distance to all important moniuments.

What could be improved: It is difficult to find any negative points.

  • Han from South Korea – 14 August 2024 (10/10)

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Michaela from Australia – 5 August 2024 (8/10)

This apartment was spacious, quiet and clean. It was in a quiet area but close walk to everything. Stunning view of the canal. The host was from an accomodation rental company who was lovely.
