Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Palazzo Venere Apartments almost by accident during my last trip to Venice – well, not really by accident, but you know how it is when you’re weaving through those narrow calles in San Polo, dodging the occasional delivery cart and trying not to get lost in the maze. I’d just hopped off the vaporetto at San Silvestro stop, which is honestly the smartest way to arrive since there are no cars in Venice anyway, and after a quick five-minute walk down Calle della Lacca, there it was: this unassuming yet elegant old palazzo tucked away from the main tourist drag. The address is right there at 2463, and let me tell you, finding it without Google Maps might test your patience – especially if you’re lugging suitcases over those little bridges – but once you’re in, it’s like stepping into a slice of real Venetian life. Check-in was a breeze; the host met me at the door with a warm “buongiorno” and a quick rundown of the keys and Wi-Fi, no fuss, no long lines like at those big hotels near San Marco. The building itself has that classic Venetian charm – think exposed wooden beams and terrazzo floors that creak just a bit underfoot, with a faint salty tang from the nearby canals drifting in through the windows.
What really sets Palazzo Venere apart, though – and I mean this after staying in a few spots around the city – is how it feels like your own little apartment in the heart of San Polo, not some sterile hotel room. I had a one-bedroom unit on the second floor (no elevator, fair warning if you’ve got mobility issues or heavy bags), and it was spacious enough to spread out, with a full kitchen that came in handy for whipping up pasta from ingredients I grabbed at the Rialto Market just a stone’s throw away – seriously, it’s about a 10-minute stroll across the bridge, past the bustling fish stalls where you can smell the fresh catch early in the morning. The decor’s a mix of modern and antique, like velvet armchairs that are surprisingly comfy for sinking into after a day of exploring, and the bathroom had one of those rain showers that make you forget the occasional canal odor outside. Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet for Venice; you’re off the main paths, so no midnight gondola serenades keeping you up, though you might hear church bells from nearby Campo San Polo tolling in the distance – sort of romantic, actually, especially during the off-season in fall when the crowds thin out. Oh, and the views from the windows overlook a quaint courtyard, nothing flashy like the Grand Canal, but that’s part of the appeal; it’s authentic, not postcard-perfect.
Honestly, if you’re the type who wants to live like a local rather than just visit, this place is a gem – rated a solid 9 for good reason, with its 4-star comforts without the pretension. Sure, the stairs can be a workout, and high water season might mean watching your step on the ground floor, but that’s Venice for you. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in spring when the nearby bacari (those tiny wine bars) are buzzing but not overwhelming. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel connected to the city, you know?

We loved the location in San Polo and there was plenty of space for our family of six. Good communication with the host, clean, spacious, secure, and comfortable. The kids loved the loft and were thrilled to have their own beds!

The location was excellent, not far from the bus and train terminal. Lots of great restaurants, bars and shops nearby without being noisy at night. The host left us a lovely bottle of Prosecco in the fridge too, which was so nice of them.
What could be improved: We would have liked more toiletries, the soap was out, and some shampoo & conditioner would have been great.Olivier from United Kingdom – 4 February 2025 (9/10)
Beautiful flat 10min from station and 20min from San Marco.
Brandon from United States – 28 November 2024 (9/10)

What could be improved: The beds & pillows were really thin & stiff
