Hotel Description
I remember stumbling upon Residence degli Artisti almost by accident last spring, when I was dodging the usual Venice crowds and needed a spot that felt more like a local hideaway than a tourist trap. It’s tucked away on Lista dei Bari in Santa Croce – you know, that quieter district just a stone’s throw from Piazzale Roma, where the buses and taxis drop you off if you’re coming from the mainland. Honestly, after lugging my suitcase over a couple of those arched bridges from the train station (it’s about a 10-minute walk, but factor in the uneven cobblestones – they can be a killer on your ankles), arriving here was like exhaling. The building itself has that classic Venetian charm, with faded ochre walls and shuttered windows that overlook a narrow rio – yeah, one of those skinny canals where you might hear the occasional splash of an oar in the morning. Check-in was a breeze; the owner, this friendly guy named Marco, greeted me with a espresso and a quick rundown of the neighborhood – he even pointed out a hidden bacaro down the calle for cicchetti, which turned out to be my go-to spot for cheap prosecco and octopus salad after long days wandering.
What really sets this place apart, though – and I mean this as someone who’s stayed in a dozen Venice hotels over the years – is how it blends that old-world artistry with practical comforts without feeling stuffy. The rooms are spacious for Venice standards (mine had a little kitchenette, perfect for brewing your own coffee and avoiding those overpriced café markups on San Marco), and they’re decked out with these quirky murals and antique furniture that nod to the “degli Artisti” name – like, actual artist residencies used to happen here back in the day, or so Marco claimed. It’s not flawless; the Wi-Fi can get spotty during peak tourist hours in summer, when everyone’s uploading their gondola selfies, and if your room faces the canal, you might catch a faint whiff of brackish water on humid evenings – but hey, that’s authentic Venice for you. Mornings were my favorite: waking up to the soft hum of vaporettos chugging by on the Grand Canal (it’s just a five-minute stroll away), and the place stays surprisingly quiet at night, even with the nearby Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio buzzing with locals grabbing aperitivi. Parking’s a non-issue since, well, cars don’t exist here – but if you’re arriving by water taxi, they can drop you right at a nearby landing.
All in all, if you’re after a four-star spot that scores an 8.8 for good reason – think cozy vibes, solid value, and that insider feel without the Rialto chaos – Residence degli Artisti is worth it. I’ve recommended it to friends who want to experience Venice like a semi-local, especially in shoulder seasons like April or October when the crowds thin out and you can actually hear yourself think. It’s not the flashiest, but it sticks with you – sort of like that perfect, unhurried canal-side stroll you didn’t plan but end up loving.

great space and the air conditioner was very welcome on the hot days.
What could be improved: Nothing it was very good. lots of stairs but that’s to be excepted in Venice, where accommodation is scarce.Karin from South Africa – 19 June 2023 (9/10)
We liked the size, cleanliness, comfort, facilities, i.e., aircon, skylight, etc., kitchen essentials, i.e., fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, coffee machine, kettle and all cutleries as well as the availability of a lift.
What could be improved: Maybe the views, but it wasn't important.See from Singapore – 15 June 2023 (8/10)
Clean, spacious, near to the train station and water taxi station. Good air conditioning and good hot water for showering.
What could be improved: (1) No lift and located on the 4th floor.
(2) It is located across the river from the train station, so will have to climb alot of stairs (with luggages) to get the apartment. else, will have to pay for porter service to get yr luggages across.Cary from Philippines – 23 October 2022 (9/10)
I like the apartment size and cleanliness, I love to stay on upper floors and this was perfect, no problem bringing luggages up because there is a lift for it. kitchen equipment is complete. location is ok near to restaurants and a convenience store
