Hotel Description
You know, the first time I hopped off the vaporetto at the Palanca stop on Giudecca and dragged my suitcase down that quiet stretch of Fondamenta San Giacomo – well, it felt like I’d escaped the mad crush of San Marco without actually leaving Venice. Residenza Giudecca Molino Stucky is tucked right there at Giudecca 812, in what used to be part of this massive old flour mill – the Molino Stucky, you might’ve heard of it, that hulking red-brick beast that’s been turned into a mix of fancy digs and apartments. It’s not your typical Venetian palazzo; it’s got this industrial edge, with exposed beams and high ceilings that make you feel like you’re staying in a piece of history. Honestly, arriving in the late afternoon, with the sun dipping over the lagoon and that salty breeze carrying hints of fried fish from a nearby trattoria, I thought, “This is Venice without the postcard chaos.” Check-in was a breeze – the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best time to catch the No. 2 line back to Piazzale Roma (avoid rush hour, they said, or you’ll be sardined in with tourists). No parking worries here, obviously – it’s Venice, so everything’s by boat or foot – but if you’re lugging heavy bags, that 10-minute walk from the stop can feel longer than it is, especially after a long flight.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how it balances that old-mill grit with some seriously comfortable touches. My room overlooked the Giudecca Canal – I mean, waking up to the soft lap of water against the pilings and the distant hum of vaporettos was pure magic, especially in the quieter months like October when the summer hordes thin out. It’s rated 8.8 for good reason; the four-star setup includes these spacious apartments with kitchenettes (handy for whipping up a quick pasta from the little market on Calle Lunga San Barnaba, just a short boat ride away), and the beds are that perfect firm-but-plush Italian style that leaves you sleeping like a rock. There’s a rooftop terrace too – not always crowded, which is a godsend – where you can sip an Aperol spritz and watch the sunset paint the water orange. Sure, it’s not dead silent at night; you might hear the occasional boat horn or church bells from Il Redentore nearby, but it’s nothing like the constant buzz over in Dorsoduro. And let’s be real, the Wi-Fi can be spotty in spots – blame the thick brick walls, I guess – but for a place that’s more residential than hotel-hotel, it feels authentic, like you’re actually living in Venice rather than just visiting. I wandered down to Harry’s Dolci for gelato one evening (it’s practically next door, hidden gem for locals avoiding the tourist traps), and it hit me how Giudecca’s got this underrated vibe – fewer selfie sticks, more real neighborhood spots like that bakery on Fondamenta Zattere with the fresh focaccia that smells like heaven in the morning.
All in all, if you’re the type who wants Venice’s romance without the elbow-to-elbow crowds – maybe a couple on a second honeymoon or a family needing space to spread out – this is your spot. It’s not the cheapest, but for what you get, that 8.8 rating feels spot-on. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the lagoon’s all misty and the place feels like your own private island retreat. Just pack light, time your vaporetto rides right, and let the slower pace sink in – you won’t regret it.

I really loved this flat! I had to attend a work conference in the Hilton next door, and this was literally 2 minutes away.. The flat was large and bigger than I expected! Very clean, with 2 full size bathrooms. Right on the water side as well, with lovely views and easy walk to ferry and restaurants Alvise was very helpful. I don't think any host has ever sent me a clear video of how to find the keys, open door code etc. He was fast and responsive.
What could be improved: All good. The supermarket shuts a bit earl y by 8.30 if anyone needs later. Person in flat above was very noisy in the night, but otherwise all okCaspar from Netherlands – 23 May 2022 (4/10)
