Hotel Description

I remember stumbling upon Residenza San Marco 4893 almost by accident – well, not really, since I’d booked it ahead, but you know how Venice can feel like a maze even with a map app glued to your phone. Tucked away in this narrow sotoportego off Calle Larga San Marco, right in the heart of San Marco district, it’s one of those spots that locals might nod at approvingly because it’s not screaming for attention like the big hotels along the Grand Canal. I arrived on foot from the Rialto vaporetto stop, dodging the afternoon crowds spilling out from the bridge, and honestly, after weaving through those tight alleys with my suitcase bumping against the uneven pavement, finding the entrance felt like a little victory. The building itself is this charming old palazzo – think exposed wooden beams and that faint, musty scent of aged stone mixed with whatever’s baking from the pasticceria around the corner on Campo San Luca. Check-in was a breeze; the staff (a mix of Venetians who actually live here year-round) handed over the keys with a casual chat about avoiding the high-water alerts in November – practical stuff that made me feel like I wasn’t just another tourist.

What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that historic vibe with just enough modern comforts without going overboard. My room overlooked a quiet courtyard – no canal views, mind you, which keeps the noise down at night when the day-trippers clear out, but you can hear the distant hum of bells from St. Mark’s Basilica if you crack the window. The bed was plush, with those crisp linens that actually feel like they’ve been ironed that morning, and the bathroom had this rainfall shower that was a godsend after a day of traipsing around. Breakfast is served in a cozy communal area downstairs – nothing fancy, just fresh cornetti, cappuccino, and some fruit, but it’s included and way better than grabbing something overpriced at a cafe on the square. I mean, it’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi can be spotty in the thicker-walled rooms (Venice’s old buildings, right?), and there are stairs everywhere – no elevator, so pack light if you’re not up for lugging bags. But during the quieter shoulder seasons like early spring, when the fog rolls in and the streets empty out by 8 PM, it feels like your own private hideaway. Oh, and if you’re into exploring, it’s a quick five-minute stroll to the Fenice opera house or that hidden bacaro on Calle della Mandola for cicchetti – the kind of spots where you overhear real Venetian gossip, not just tour groups.

All in all, if you’re after a 4-star stay that doesn’t feel like a chain hotel plopped in the lagoon, this is it. With a 9.1 rating that actually holds up from my experience, it’s worth the splurge for couples or solo travelers who want to dip into the chaos of San Marco without sleeping in it. Sure, Venice can be overwhelming – the summer crowds are brutal, and everything’s a bit pricier here – but Residenza San Marco 4893 sort of grounds you, you know? It reminds you why people fall for this sinking city in the first place. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in autumn when the light hits the canals just right.

  • Loved it, would recommend. – Dave from United States – 5 December 2024 (10/10)

Lots of room, great part of town, not too far from the big Doge Palace and St. Mark’s basilica. Grocery store not too far, plenty of room for a family of six. Would recommend.

What could be improved: A little hard to find, but that’s just Venice.

  • First time in Venice and would definitely do again! – Kami from United States – 18 October 2024 (10/10)

This property was in a great location right on the canal! We took a water taxi from the airport and dropped us off right in front. 5 min walk to lots of shopping and restaurants.

What could be improved: Nothing at all!

  • Marco was a genius host with a beautiful apartment – Gail from Australia – 26 September 2024 (9/10)

Marcos directions that enabled us to get to apt without using stairs were truly life saving in a very busy Venice in the rain with 5 people and luggage.

What could be improved: I like everything though if you wanted to avoid the nose you had to shut all the windows completely .

  • Great apartment in a fantastic location – Pina from Australia – 15 September 2024 (10/10)

Apartment is very spacious and perfect for families and in a great location. Marco was very friendly and helpful 24/7 if needed
